Employees are happiest when they’re doing great things and employees are really happy when they’re doing things that even they didn’t know that they could do.
And so I’ve got a couple tips for bringing employees to that level. One is, give them ownership, make sure that they know, “You – Fred, Gill, whoever you are, you’re responsible for this area and success or failure of this thing which is important to the company is dependent on you and what you do.”
The second is that they have to really understand how what they’re doing fits into the bigger picture of the company, of the strategic picture, the revenue picture, the sales picture, all of those things, because maybe you’ve given them a job that’s not exactly the best thing to achieve that goal. They might surprise you and come back and say, “You know what, for the big picture, I think this whole project could be scoped slightly differently and give us something that’s really great that gets us there faster.”
I’m always amazed at what people can produce when you give them the right information, real transparency of information, a clear mission, and an understanding of what they’re trying to achieve in the grander scheme of the companies objectives.
So, empower your employees and they will make your company powerful.
