The secret to effective public speaking is a little humility. A lot of people have to stand up in front of a crowd have an ego. You have to have an ego to be able to stand up there. But the number one thing that will save you is a little humility. It’s often underrated.

Number one, don’t be a know-it-all when you’re standing up in front of a crowd. If you don’t know something, that’s okay, and sometimes it’s good not to know it all.

Secondly, include your audience. If you don’t know everything and someone asked a question, turn it back to the audience. Someone in the audience might actually have something valuable to add and I often find that I can learn something from others, so ask the question.

Third, share your experiences always to enhance something that you’re telling them but don’t always use it to promote yourself. People are there to listen to you for a reason. You don’t have to promote yourself any further than you’ve already done.

Finally, apologize if you must speak. If something happens, you say something you shouldn’t have, you speak out of turn or you use a word maybe you would prefer not to use in public, just apologize. It happens to everyone. The secret to effective public speaking is always be a little humble. It goes a long way.
