  • Bibliography for Studies of American Indians
Bibliography for Studies of American Indians

    $25.00

    Document Overview:
An attempt has been made to record all relevant published documents for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, and major documents for Massachusetts and Connecticut that fall under the scholarly rubrics of history, archaeology and anthropology (including linguistics and other subcategories related to “ethnography”). There is a large body of highly specialized research on Native American linguistics relating to Indians in and around Rhode Island which we cannot capture in this volume. The reader is referred to Ives Goddard, ed., Handbook of North American Indians, Vol. 17 (Languages), Washington, D.C., Smithsonian Institution. 152 pages.

  • Grammatical Studies in the Narragansett Language
Grammatical Studies in the Narragansett Language

    $25.00

    Document Overview:
In this treatise we provide a second edition of a brief grammatical sketch of the Narragansett language as preserved by Roger Williams in his 1643 classic, A Key into the Language of America. The audience is not the professional Algonquian linguist scholar. That is, we do not use or intend to use the technical linguistics terminology one sees in the standardwork, Native Writings in Massachusett by Goddard & Bragdon. Rather we cite and define the analogous technical forms in Goddard and Bragdon for readers who wish to learn the structure of this extinct language in that format. The Aquidneck Indian Council “retranslated” A Key(essentially we rearranged the material and pointed out printers errors, etc.) and wrote a brief dictionary to support the retranslated text. The dictionary is keyed to page numbers in A Key for the vocabulary and grammatical terms cited. Introduction to the Narragansett Language(2001) and Indian Grammar Dictionary (2000) form the core of language revitalization efforts for this unique language. The present paper provides a roadmap for navigating these works. We compare the data and information in Narragansett to its sister dialect, Natick-Massachusett.Thereby one sees vividly the paucity of nouns, verbs &c existent in Narragansett as well as the potential for partial regeneration.

  • American Indian Studies in the extinct languages of southeastern New England
American Indian Studies in the extinct languages of southeastern New England

    $25.00

    Document Overview:
This monograph contains 13 self-contained brief treatises, listed in the Table of Contents. These chapters comprise material on linguistic, historical and cultural studies of the extinct American Indian languages of southeastern New England. These Indian languages, and their dialects, were once spoken principally in the States of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. They are called “Massachusett” and “Narragansett”. These Indian tongues are a subset of a larger group of about three dozen Indian languages called the Algonquian language family. The manuscript summarizes work over the past decade relating to the documentation, analysis and reconstruction of these lost and sleeping American Indian languages. The primary focus is comparative Algonquian vocabulary and elementary grammatical structures, derived from the scholarly linguistic and anthropological literature, oral tradition, and the authors own (hypothetical) reconstructive contributions.
