  • Preventing Wood Stains During Kiln Drying
Preventing Wood Stains During Kiln Drying

    $6.95

    From:ProQuest LLC

    Document Overview:
Stain is often not detected until lumber reaches the planer mill. For that reason, the kiln-drying operation (including the kiln operator) is often the first area that is questioned. As mentioned previously, most, but not all, stain develops as a result of conditions prior to kiln drying. Therefore, it is good practice to closely monitor for the presence of incoming stain either in the logs or the green lumber. Sap -stain and mould will be readily visible on green lumber or logs. Quality-control personnel and kilnoperating staff should inspect for and document the presence of stain in incoming logs and green lumber packages. If it is found, then obviously the problem needs to be addressed at the supply end. Unfortunately, chemical discolourations such as brown stain in white pine may not be visible until after drying and therefore it may be more difficult to determine if its presence is related to the kiln-drying operations or the pre-kiln-drying operations. However, if sapstain has been detected prior to kiln drying, there is a good possibility that some chemical discolourations will also be apparent after drying (in species that are susceptible to such discolourations).

    Document Overview:
[Tremblay] adds that with today's equipment, the reliability and durability of swivels is even more important than it was just a few years ago. "There were already some failure problems with swivels five or six years ago when machines were working at around 3000 PSI," he explains. "It is even more common today as industry requires machines to work faster and be stronger, resulting in increased production. That has also meant an increase in PSI up to 4600 or more. With that much pressure and a lot of hose movements in forestry machines, lower-quality swivels will fail at an even quicker rate. That is the reality and the reason why we design and manufacture our swivels to higher standards, including the ability to handle up to 6000 PSI.""We always thought that working with Gates would be a good match," Tremblay says enthusiastically when discussing the agreement. "Gates really did their homework. They said 'your swivels look good, but are they good?' To be sure, they bought a number of different swivels that are on the market and completed an extensive testing program. Quite frankly, we were worried because we didn't have any control over how the products were tested. We already knew that our swivels worked well in the field, but the only lab testing we had done was for safety, so we didn't know how they would perform in the Gates lab."Tremblay says people still ask them who they are and where they are from. "We say 'nowhere' when asked about our location," he jokes, referring to the fact that their offices and production facilities are located in a rural area of Quebec called the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. "We are based in Saint-Prime, which is a town of fewer than 3,000 people, but in some ways our location has really helped our business grow," he explains. "We are located in the heart of the northeast logging industry and we have a major logging region of Quebec right on our doorstep. Machines in this area generally work 16 hours per day, in all kind of temper

    Document Overview:
Just as contractors and truckers in Northern B.C. are gearing up to deliver their inventory, another January thaw interrupts their plans. With the warmer winters we have experienced over the past few years, it's a scenario that can occur just about anywhere in Canada's North. It results in the need to move millions of metres of wood, but in fewer days than originally scheduled. It's a situation that may tempt some log haulers to test their resilience and push the limits of fatigue. Before you consider travelling that road, there are a few things worth knowing about fatigue, its effects, ways to recognize it, and what you can do to manage it.Acute and Cumulative Sleep Loss: Everyone's sleep needs are unique, but 90% of us require 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep per day to perform optimally. Acute sleep loss occurs when an individual receives less than their usual 7.5 to 8.5 hours within a 24-hour period. Cumulative sleep loss occurs over several days. For example, if you lose one hour of sleep each night, after five days, you have a sleep debt of five hours. Recovery from sleep debt does not require hour-for-hour pay back - two nights of good rest will often reduce accumulated sleep debt to zero.About now you're probably thinking, "So what, I am like every other trucker. Fatigue is simply part of my world." You're right. In one survey of B.C. truckers, including log haulers, 100% acknowledged they have driven their truck while fatigued. But they also recognized that it was a key variable that's in their control. Here are a few of the tools you can use to manage fatigue.

    Document Overview:
What we concentrated on first for 2012 was evaluating those half- ton pickups that fill the bulk of the market. We had pickups from the veteran three - Ford, GM and Chrysler, as well as the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan, which are two trucks that very much want to be thought of as North American. Next we set up a full tow test to work the trucks. Now, we always tow, but this year thanks to partnering with Campkins RV Centre, we were able to secure five travel trailers, each with a net weight of right around 8,000 lb., and do all our towing back to back at the same time. To be dead fair to all of the truck competitors, we also borrowed five brand-new equalizing hitches from Equal-i-zer. These spread the load across the chassis of each truck and achieved a level attitude for each entire rig regardless of the various wheelbase lengths.* 2012 Toyota Tundra, Double Cab, 4WD, TRD Off-road Package, 5.7L i-Force V8, six-speed automatic - MSRP $43,975* 2012 Ram 1500, Crew Cab, 4WD, Laramie, 5.7L Hemi V8, six-speed automatic - MSRP $54,825

    Document Overview:
The Dionne family, which owns Abattage B. OD., recently added a new ingrethent to that recipe when it acquired a new purpose-built tracked cut-to-length (CTL) harvester designed to cut fuel costs. The Landlich LR-HV with a Ponsse H7 head has so far delivered on that front, saving the company 25% on its weekly fuel bill. The Dionnes chose to replace their old purpose-built harvester in 2011. At 10 years old, it still ran, but at a growing cost. "The machine was still good, but we had reached the point where the maintenance and repair would start costing more in the long run than buying a new harvester," explains Abattage B.C.D. president Eric Dionne. The goal in making the move was to realize long-term savings while immediately lowering the cost of producing a cubic metre of wood. Fuel economy remains a driving factor, notes vicepresident of the company, Stphane Dionne, who together with cousin Eric runs the company from an office in Saint-Honor near Chicoutimi. "We try to bring down the price per cubic metre of wood in every way possible," Stphane notes."During the two days of the expo, I spoke with the chief engineer of the company, digging out more information on the machine functions," explains Eric. "It was also important for us to learn about the vision of AL Manufacturing, and learn a little about its financial health." The contractor was impressed by the overall design of the tracked harvester, but especially the parts design, the hydraulic system and the electronic interface designed by AL Fabrication's chief engineer Yves-Michel Thibeault. The interface optimizes the harvesting head. "The Landrich is not a collage of disparate pieces of different companies," Thibeault explains. "Each piece is unique and has been manufactured in a vision that aims to maximize the productivity of the harvester." Eric was also pleased that the Landrich harvester included many of the conceptual and mechanical improvements he was looking for in their next harvester. "Many harves
