I think "How do you know?" was my favorite phrase that semester, and frankly I'm still a little surprised that Heather didn't fire me! I tucked that question away until many years later when my PhD advisor, bob butler, introduced me to the geoscience education literature.

It provides summary information in the areas of children's environmental health, indoor air quality, exposure hazards related to: lead, mercury, asbestos, and pesticides. Of the 44 states that held regular sessions in 2008, 35 state legislatures introduced bills dealing with children's environmental health, focusing on issues such as children's exposure to tobacco smoke, prohibiting the manufacture or distribution of phthalates, bisphenol-A or lead-containing products, or limits on pesticide applications around schools or at public events. California also remains at the forefront of environmental health policy with legislation seeking to curb or ban certain chemicals, bills to monitor toxic discharges into waterways, recycling of mercury from thermometers, requirements for indoor air in schools and assessments of water toxicity levels in schools, and preparations of environmental impact statements before spraying pesticides in urban areas, to name a few.

In total, 280 attendees participated in the survey The following is a synopsis of the survey results. * Ninety-nine percent of respondents agreed that what was presented at the 2008 AEC & Exhibition was relevant to them. * In addition to the high-quality lecture hall educational sessions, respondents identified networking opportunities, skills gained from the newly introduced Learning Laboratory sessions, and preconference workshops as personally relevant. * Out of the newly introduced Learning Laboratory sessions, respondents named the "Pecha Kucha" (a novel way of using PowerPoint in presentations) and Inspector Idol (skills on how to work with the media) sessions as favorites. * This year, NEHA received its highest overall ranking in the last five years (4.17 out of 5) in the relevance, usefulness, and value the conference had for its attendees. * To improve next year's AEC & Exhibition, many suggested not splitting conference venues and locating the conference close to retail outlets.
