    Document Overview:
The kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh's infant son, and the subsequent trial and execution of Bruno Richard Hauptmann, have been a source of fascination for more than 70 years. Now, for the first time, William Norris delves into sources of information ignored by previous investigators and comes up with the identity of the true culprit. Lindbergh is exposed as having obstructed the investigation and lied on oath in order to secure the conviction of Hauptmann. His motive: to avoid the public scandal which would break if Dwight Jr, his brother in law and scion of one of America's most wealthy and prestigious families, were to come under investigation. Dwight Jr. hated Lindbergh for marrying his sister Anne and usurping his position in the Morrow family. The birth of the Lindbergh's son was a further blow. He was schizophrenic, heard "voices", and had been confined to mental institutions for long periods immediately prior to the kidnap. Indeed, he was under treatment for the rest of his life. Following the death of his father in October 1931, Dwight Jr. was said to have been angry at the lack of any specific bequest in his father's will. His inheritance (like those of the other children) was to be left to the discretion of his mother - who did not like him much. Rumour, contained in letters to Hoffman, suggests that he approached his mother and demanded $50,000, which was refused. He made the same demand of Lindbergh, and was again turned down. There was a row, and he left swearing vengeance. $50,000, of course, was the amount of the ransom demand - a ridiculously low sum, given the wealth of the Morrows, if this had been a professional job. It was also the amount bequeathed to Dwight Jr in his mother's will on her death in 1955, as a specific addition to the equal share in her estate given to the other surviving children. No other researcher has ever discovered this.

  • The Daughters of Juarez
    The Daughters of Juarez

    $14.39

    Document Overview:
Despite the fact that Juarez is a Mexican border city just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, most Americans are unaware that for more than twelve years this city has been the center of an epidemic of horrific crimes against women and girls, consisting of kidnappings, rape, mutilation, and murder, with most of the victims conforming to a specific profile: young, slender, and poor, fueling the premise that the murders are not random. Indeed, there has been much speculation that the killer or killers are American citizens. While some leading members of the American media have reported on the situation, prompting the U.S. government to send in top criminal profilers from the FBI, little real information about this international atrocity has emerged. According to Amnesty International, as of 2006 more than 400 bodies have been recovered, with hundreds still missing. As for who is behind the murders themselves, the answer remains unknown, although many have argued that the killings have become a sort of blood sport, due to the lawlessness of the city itself. Among the theories being considered are illegal trafficking in human organs, ritualistic satanic sacrifices, copycat killers, and a conspiracy between members of the powerful Juárez drug cartel and some corrupt Mexican officials who have turned a blind eye to the felonies, all the while lining their pockets with money drenched in blood. Despite numerous arrests over the last ten years, the murders continue to occur, with the killers growing bolder, dumping bodies in the city itself rather than on the outskirts of town, as was initially the case, indicating a possible growing and most alarming alliance of silence and cover-up by Mexican politicians. The Daughters of Juárez promises to be the first eye-opening, authoritative nonfiction work of its kind to examine the brutal killings and draw attention to these atrocities on the border. The end result will shock readers and become required reading on the subject

There have been countless attempts to solve the brutal murders committed more than 100 years ago by Jack the Ripper, but this most famous of British criminal cases finally benefits from a clear, professional eye to analyze the evidence with all the benefits of modern investigative techniques. Casting aside the rumors, fantasies, and urban legends which have haunted this case for so long, Trevor Marriott produces some startling results—while it has long been accepted that Jack the Ripper killed only five women, Marriott believes there were up to nine victims. Most astonishingly of all, a previously unconsidered suspect who also committed murders in America and Germany has been firmly put in the frame. All previous theories are refuted in what may possibly be the final word on the Ripper murders.

  • The Anatomy Of Motive
    The Anatomy Of Motive

    $7.19

    Document Overview:
Why?In this eagerly anticipated new book from the international bestselling authors of Mindhunter, Journey into Darkness, and Obsession, legendary crime fighter John Douglas explores the root of all crime -- motive.Every crime is a mystery story with a motive at its heart. Understand the motive and you can solve the mystery. The Anatomy of Motive offers a dramatic, insightful look at the development and evolution of the criminal mind. The famed former chief of the FBI's Investigative Support Unit, Douglas was the pioneer of modern behavioral profiling of serial criminals. Working again with acclaimed novelist, journalist, and filmmaker Mark Olshaker, the collaborator on his previous three bestsellers, and using cases from his own fabled career as examples, Douglas takes us further than ever before into the dark corners of the minds of arsonists, hijackers, bombers, poisoners, serial and spree killers, and mass murderers. From seemingly ordinary men who suddenly kill their families or go on a rampage in the workplace to dedicated murderers who embark on the kind of spree that resulted in the death of fashion designer Gianni Versace, John Douglas helps us understand what causes violent sociopathic behavior. In chapters such as "Playing with Fire," "Name Your Poison," and "Guys Who Snap," he shows how criminals use and react to the media and how the motives behind hijacking and terrorism have evolved through recent history. For the first time, Douglas identifies the common building blocks contributing to the violently antisocial personality, showing the surprising similarities and equally surprising differences between various types of offenders. Douglas profiles notorious assassins, examining that particular personality and how it applies to other types of crimes. Drawing on cases from today's headlines, he looks at recent sniper incidents at schools and other public places to penetrate the minds and motivations of mass killers. As Douglas tracks the progressive escalat

  • Who Killed Rosemary Nelson?
    Who Killed Rosemary Nelson?

    $14.39

    Document Overview:
In March 1999, just months after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, human rights lawyer Rosemary Nelson was assassinated when a bomb exploded under her car. The attack was claimed by a Loyalist paramilitary group but, over the last 10 years, there have been several government inquiries into Nelson’s murder. The latest one, which has been ongoing since 2005, has heard dramatic allegations that there may have been some security service collusion in the killing. Rosemary Nelson came to prominence for representing high-profile Republican and nationalist clients. It was no secret that her life was at risk and she had received many death threats—but had always been refused police protection. She had even claimed publicly that her life was being threatened by members of the RUC—allegations which have always been denied by the police. This fascinating and in-depth book takes an unflinching yet impartial look at this controversial case. As well as investigating the events leading to Rosemary Nelson’s murder, author Neil Root examines the striking similarities between her death and the assassination of solicitor Pat Finucane in 1989. This is a complex and terrifying story which deserves to be told.
