    Document Overview:
A cycle of thirteen episodes told in Story Theater form, a narrator speaking and life-sized puppets performing simultaneously, Metamorphoses tells the stories from Greek mythology—from the first moments of creation to its version of the flood, and the trials, tribulations, and joys during Zeus's long reign. It brings to life some of the most memorable episodes and characters in that saga: the Titans, the Cyclops, Zeus himself, Echo and Narcissus, Cupid and Psyche, Theseus, Orpheus and Eurydice, and many, many more. This version of the stories by playwright Leon Katz is based on the Roman poet Ovid's epic poem, Metamorphoses, the most popular and witty retelling of the tales in Western literature.Metamorphoses have an impressive track record. It ran for ten years in the Vagabond Puppets Company's production and, during that time, toured throughout the U.S. Its appeal has been strong with both young audiences and adults alike and was seen by thousands of theatergoers.BOSON BOOKS also offers Midnight Plays by Leon Katz. Midnight Plays

    $3.59

    $3.59

    From:Boson Books

    Document Overview:
Midnight Plays anthologizes four plays from four different worlds of story-telling: a Victorian tale of vampires (Dracula/Sabbat), a story of Jewish mysticism (The Dybbuk), a scatological retelling of the Oedipus myth (Swellfoot's Tears), and a tale from the Marquis de Sade (Justine). Their common denominator is their Grand Guignol environment that plays into and pays homage to the Grand Guignol spirit of the past century's morality. Each of the four protagonists—Justine, Swellfoot, Dracula, Channan—plays holy fool who whether he shares or is outraged by that morality—it makes little difference—is brutally victimized by it. The plays explore what is left of heroism, possibly meaningless, certainly helpless, but, paradoxically, still uncompromising...Dracula: Sabbat -The play simmers with nakedness and erotic energy. A work of absolute authenticity—with beauty, dignity, gravity and sensuality, rare to the point of near extinction in any part of our contemporary theater ... It is beautiful in its shivery delight and awed fear of tension and release.—Jack Kroll, Newsweek...Justine -Katz has taken one of the most horrific tales of human degradation in Western literature and fashioned it into an extraordinary, beautiful theatrical experience.— Pittsburgh Post-Gazette...The Dybbuk -Brio, exaltation, pure and sinister passion exudes from this La Mama production of The Dybbuk, a production which satisfyingly plunges us way over our heads into the story by using a full range of modern devices and insights.— Village Voice , NY...Boson Books also offers Metamorphoses by Leon Katz. $7.13

    Document Overview:
Michael, a missionary priest in Kenya, has just killed Munyasya, a retired army officer. It might have been an accident, but Mulonzya, a politician resentful of the power of foreign churches, tries to exploit the tragedy for his own ends. Boniface, a young church worker, and his wife, Josephine, have just lost their child. They did not make it to the hospital in time, possibly because Michael made a detour to retrieve a letter from the Mission, a letter from Janet, a former volunteer teacher who was the priest's neighbour for two years. It is Munyasya who has the last laugh, however, when he reveals that he was probably in control of events all along. Thirty years on, the same characters find their lives still influenced by his memory.

    Mission to a Star

    $11.66

    Document Overview:
It began with the sighting of the Scorpion ships in the new 400-inch reflecting telescope on Mount Palomar. The ships landed on Earth to disgorge aliens quite indistinguishable from human beings, except that they were all apparently equal to the genius level of human beings. And, all were in perfect physical condition. They came in peace, they said. Their leader spoke to a plenary session of the United Nations — nations truly united now in the face of what might be a threat to all the peoples of Earth — and he talked as if he were talking to old and trusted friends. He said, "You have asked for proof that we are a responsible and enlightened race. There can be no wisdom without strength, no true enlightenment unless the power to work immense harm exists and is deliberately renounced. We have come to Earth on a scientific mission only, just as someday you will travel to the stars. We ask only complete freedom... your friendship, trust, and understanding as long as we choose to remain." He said that the Scorpions abhorred any form of aggressive violence directed against a fellow human being, or a nation, or an entire planet. He offered to give the peoples of Earth a demonstration of Scorpion power. An island was selected for the demonstration, and at the time appointed, all the peoples of Earth saw that the Scorpions had neither lied nor exaggerated; when the moment came, a single Scorpion spaceship hovering over the island seemed to shudder along its entire length. Then a blinding burst of incandescence came from it, sweeping downward and outward until the entire island was enveloped in a bright, steady glow. When the glow vanished, the island was gone. Yes, the Scorpions had the power to conquer or destroy Earth, but after seven years, no one knew as yet what their "scientific mission" was, how long they would stay, or what their relationship with Earthlings really meant. Even though there had never been even a hint of interference with the governments of Earth, peo
