    Document Overview:
Why is the loan mod process so difficult? Here are some points to keep in mind: • Mortgage banking jargon can be difficult (and this is at least partly by design). For example, some banks and loan servicing companies use the term “loss mitigation” instead of “loan modification.” If the homeowner doesn’t know this, he or she can get lost in a bureaucratic maze of telephone calls forwarded to the wrong offices. • Some consumers confuse a loan modification with a forbearance agreement. These are two separate types of agreements. A loan modification is a permanent change to the loan, based on the borrower’s proven inability to repay under existing terms and conditions. A forbearance agreement is temporary relief, usually in the form of payments suspended for a few months. • The standard telephone-based communications between borrowers and lenders or servicers is not designed for efficiency. Most borrowers have to spend hours navigating through automated systems and “phone trees” (usually during business hours only), explaining their situations repeatedly. This can be discouraging. Constant follow-up is usually required—as well as repeated sending of applications and documents. All of these factors combine for a troubling final statistic: Fewer than 10 percent of homeowner-submitted loan modifications are successful. The mortgage industry insists this is due primarily to homeowners submitting incomplete loan modification packages. So, borrowers need to make sure they submit complete applications. CRAMDOWN shows them how. The book starts with Edward Liddy’s efforts in late 2008 and early 2009 to renegotiate the terms of the financial bailout that AIG had received from the U.S. federal government. The editors go on to write: You shouldn’t be angry about Liddy’s shameless bid to change the terms of deals his company had made. You should learn from it. Finance—even personal finance—isn’t about shame or other moral matters. It’s about pract

Democratic National Convetion 2008 is a photographic tribute of the DNC in Denver. For one memorable week in the summer of 2008, the ambitions of a groundbreaking politician and a rising city matched perfectly. US senator Barack Obama, the first African American presidential nominee of a major political party, made his way west to accept his historic nomination before a massive gathering under the stars. And a burgeoning city eager to take its role as a great metropolitan area put on a show unlike any the national political parties had ever seen before.

    Libertarian Nation

    $17.96

    Document Overview:
Everyone who follows politics and public policy issues knows things are changing in the United States. And this change is more than just some office holder’s slogan. It’s a tectonic shift in the way Americans think about themselves and their government—and it means the end of traditional Right-Left, Democrat-Republican orientation. Silver Lake Publishing’s LIBERTARIAN NATION: The Call for a New Agenda gives readers a fundamental understanding of the philosophy of individual liberty…and statist collectivism. It puts these philosophies in the context of American history—and applies them to the issues facing the United States today. At the start of the book, author Walsh writes: The current political debate that you see on TV and online is not a real exchange of ideas. It’s bread and circuses. ...This nation has spent and borrowed its way to a crisis point. We’re losing our position as a world leader. And we need to get back to the philosophical roots on which the nation was...

    Document Overview:
As Walsh points out in LIBERTY IN TROUBLED TIMES, legal technicalities that favor warrantless surveillance are precisely what’s wrong with FISA and the Patriot Act. “These laws, with their vague and convoluted definitions of key concepts like surveillance, communication and citizen are simply the worst kind of statist power grab,” he writes. In LIBERTY IN TROUBLED TIMES, the author acknowledges that some parts of the Patriot Act—especially those that allow more direct data-sharing among law enforcement agencies—are defensible. But “the Patriot Act is an elaborate house built on top if the FISA, which is a foundation of sand.” Walsh remains hopeful about public response: History suggests that liberties will rebound. They did after the statist power grabs that produced Adams’s Alien and Sedition Acts, Lincoln’s suspension of habeas corpus and FDR’s imprisonment of Americans of Japanese ancestry. ...the Patriot Act will likely join those laws in the reject bin of U.S legal history.

    The Fresh Politics Reader

    $16.16

    Document Overview:
You think about politics a lot. Are you confounded by how under-30 voters turn out? There’s some truth and a lot of B.S. in the prevailing wisdom that we all hear. And the B.S. is piling up. Political consultants wax up their battlefield tactics and political pundits dust off their clichés. Young voters are apathetic. They’re pacifists. They get their news from music videos and comedians. They whine about no good jobs. They trend Left on issues but Right on personalities. American readers and voters deserve better than this. They need practical insights how young people think about politics. Taylor Buley delivers some of these insights in his new book THE FRESH POLITICS READER: Making Current Events and Public Affairs Relevant to Young Americans (Silver Lake Publishing, 2006). Buley’s conclusions are simple and strong. He’s refined them on the political Web site he founded—www.freshpolitics.us. And he knows what he’s talking about. He’s 20 years old.

    The Personal Security Handbook

    $10.76

    Document Overview:
Silver Lake Publishing’s bestselling book THE PERSONAL SECURITY HANDBOOK: Practical Tools for Keeping Yourself and Your Valuables Safe at Work, Home or on the Road translates political theories into concrete actions. The book makes the point that American homeland security policy presumes that most citizens can take care of themselves for at least 72 hours after a major disaster damages—or destroys—standard infrastructure. It focuses on giving people the tools they need to survive those first 72 hours. Specifically, the book includes extensive checklists for making disaster preparations. Whether the disasters in question are natural or man-made. Here are some of the key points: Preparing Your Family 1. Store a three-day supply of water (one gallon—two quarts for drinking, two quarts for food prep and cleaning—for each member of your household...including pets) 2. Store a three-day supply of basic dry food—crackers, snack bars, dried fruit, dried meat—so that each member of your household (including pets) can eat something every 4 to 6 hours 3. Keep a complete first-aid kit (the book includes a detailed list of items that should be in this kit) in your home…and at your work 4. Keep one battery-powered radio or TV for the household and at least two extra sets of batteries for this device 5. Keep one battery-powered flashlight for each member of your household. 6. Establish a least two escape routes from your neighborhood—in case you’re separated during an evacuation—with everyone in your household 7. Establish a safe contact (often a relative or friend) outside of your immediate area that household members can contact or where you can meet in case of separation Preparing Your Home 1. Check for any loose electrical wiring or shaky gas connection—inside and outside. Repair them personally, if you can; call a contractor, if you can’t. 2. Look for any loose structures (patios, porches, carp
