Some people are gifted enough to be able to give a speech with no preparation and nothing written down and not only it is good its funny and everyone is listening. Not everyone can do that. Others may have to write things down in advance so they dont forget anything or anyone and also say things in the right order. It is also important that the speech doesnt drag on too long. People have short attention spans and will only listen for so long before switching off. Before giving the speech, know who your crowd is, what the occasion is and what the mood will be. Humor is good but you dont want to be funny or glib when the occasion doesnt befit it. But it doesnt have to be serious and somber either. You want to make sure your delivery is good and that you arent reading it – it helps if you maintain eye contact with the audience. The body language is also important during a speech – dont slouch or slump but stand upright.
