When a mother is breastfeeding can she do so while in the midst of jury duty? Can she do so while in court? There is some 'family friendly' jury legislation which covers this but it varies from court to court and state to state. Some states expressly excuse breastfeeding mothers from being on the panel while other states allow the breastfeeding mothers to have their jury service deferred or excused. Thus far no court in any state actually allows a breastfeeding mother to feed her child in court during proceedings. The issue of breastfeeding in public has always been a delicate subject. Some people get offended by the sight of it while mothers would argue that they try to be discrete as possible. If it makes people in a court uncomfortable it's only right that the mothers be excused from jury duty. The more progressive states are the ones which have dealt with this issue while some of the other states need to catch up. But if a breastfeeding mother was in a state where there was no legislation concerning this matter and wanted to be excused from jury duty she could quote the legislation from another state. This should help her case. ... more>>

This document answers the most commonly asked questions when a court is temporarily closed down due to an unforeseen/uncontrolled event. If a court in your areas happens to be closed on the date you are expected to serve on jury duty, you will be rescheduled to come back at a later date, unless you gave your summons to a court employee before the court closure. If you need to postpone your jury duty, you may request to do so. You may report two weeks before or two weeks after your reporting date for jury duty.
If you were scheduled to appear in court during the closure, you should contact your attorney and contact the court within two weeks unless you have already received other written instructions from the court. A family member or friend who is incarcerated and was scheduled for a court hearing at the time it was closed will have a rescheduled hearing as soon as the court is able. if you were impacted by whatever caused the court to close down, you need to contact them if you are not able to make it. All regularly scheduled events will resume as soon as the court reopens. ... more>>
