Examples which prove the point and examples which disprove it. The purposes of the case study are illustration, exploration, critical analysis, analysis of implementation and analysis of the impact of programmes. Case Studies have an analytical and communicative aim. Case studies are used all the time in medical studies. They show how exposure to different things results in different symptoms. There are strengths and limitations to case studies though. The case study is already trying to prove a certain point so will include case studies that reinforce and verify it. But by and large the case study is valued and seen to do more harm than good. They provide a methodical way of looking at events and comparing that to the date collected. Case studies are pretty much am invention of the 20th century. Before hand there were no recorded instances of them being used. The Harvard Business School found that there were no appropriate case studies so made their own up. They in turn turned to the students to assist in this process.
