Suffering is programmed into us. Politicians and religious leaders play on that to get our attention, our vote and our money. This article explains how and why they do it, and why they find it so easy.

“Why did fate have to throw me into the peaceful lives of honest smugglers Like a stone hurled into the placid surface of a pond I had disturbed their tranquility, and like a stone had nearly gone to the bottom myself!”i Like Mikhail Lermontov’s fictional account of Pechorin’s encounter with smugglers in “Taman” in A Hero of Our Time, I am not certain if one could legitimately label Robert D. Kaplan in Eastward to Tartary: Travels in the Balkans, the Middle East, and the Caucasus, or any number of politicians, border guards, and professors he interviews, a victim. In Lermontov‘s “Taman”, the seducer, Pechorin, unwittingly becomes the pawn and victim of a “supple”, singing smuggler, and then a boy thief steals his saber and dagger. Kaplan might lose a little cash obtaining a visa on his running interview from Hungary to Armenia, but his interviewees always steal an opportunity to tell their respective tales. I would like to believe Kaplan orchestrated his interviews as cunningly as he organized his itinerary from one storied city to another, but like Lermontov, whose realistic portrait of the depraved Pechorin is nearly lost among his sordidly colorful characters and the enchanting Caucasus itself, Kaplan reveals a cramped world full of crooks and despots. ... more>>

ALEC (american legislative exchange council) and the Battle of the States... 'Even though vouchers are largely a Republican brainchild, Rod Paige and many other Republicans don't even like to utter the word. “Vouchers...we never use that word,” Paige said on ABCNEWS' This Week. He prefers "parental choice," and others refer to it as “portability.” “Why the fight over one word Because the word acquired a negative
connotation: it implies failure. But thats not all, ALEC has strong ties to biggots, racists and monetary scandal. for example, "groups pushing the religious right social agenda, particularly anti-choice and anti-gay, with no discernable free market economic interest.' they also throw children out in the cold like this, '“Department of Social Services shall not
provide any cash benefits to a child born out-of-wedlock or to an individual who has
not attained 18 years of age, or for the individual, until the individual attains such an
age.” and they love propaganda and literally have nazikkkwhite-supremacist ties as demonstrated by their relations with the heritage foundation, coors, fox news, scaife (funding white supremacist anti-immigration eugincs propaganda) etc. 'The Right’s message amplification frastructure has a broad reach, repeating coordinated strategic messages through multiple communication channels: conservative talk radio, Fox News, Internet sites like the Drudge Report, op-ed pieces in newspapers across the country, prefab letters-to-the-editor, books, pundits and columnists, talking points distributed to politicians and public speakers, advertisements, and newspapers like the Washington Times (cult owned herbert bush bankroller) and Wall Street Journal.' ... more>>
