Doing Business in a Digital World
This e-book offers a multi-national perspective on factors relating to digital technologies in business-to-business markets. Comprising ten articles in all it features the work of leading authors such as George, S. Day, S. Tamer Cavusgil, Roger J. Calantone and Robert E. Spekman. The first group of articles deals with utilization of information technology by firms as both a marketing tool and a means to manage supply chains effectively. The second group deals with different digital technologies and explores how these have been used to improve firm effectiveness. In sum, the articles provide both theoretical and practical perspectives on the use and utility of various digital technologies in creating business value
Electronic HRM in Theory and Practice
We hope that this book clarifies the need to crystallize a theoretical framework for e-HRM research, raises further questions, and supports discussions.Organizations have increasingly been introducing web-based applications for HRM purposes, and these are frequently labeled as electronic Human Resource Management (e-HRM). Much is expected of e-HRM in terms of improving the quality of HRM and increasing its contribution to company performance. Major investments are involved and are justified given the expectations that e-HRM will improve HRM quality in organizations by freeing staff from administrative loads. These beliefs originate from ideas about the endless possibilities of information technologies (IT) in facilitating HR practices, and about the infinite capacity of HRM to adopt IT.At the same time, it is not clear where e-HRM research should be positioned. Is it a new and substantial research area, or at the "crossroads" of other academic domains, such as Innovation Management, IT implementation, and/or HRM? Theoretical complexity has practical consequences for e-HRM projects and their management. The one-sided scholarly e-HRM works available fail to fully address this lack of clarity and, if anything, deepen the divisions between the various academic domains. To this end, we have been involved in a series of research projects, academic workshops, and conferences exploring the application of information technologies to various HR practices. Along with the Special Issues of the International Journal of HRM, International Journal of Technology and Human Interactions, and International Journal of Training and Development, this volume is a tangible outcome of three European e-HRM Academic Workshops (2006, 2008, 2010), and two International Workshops on Human Resource Management (2007 and 2008). Further, we gratefully acknowledge Graeme Martin, Martin Reddington, and Heather Alexander for their 2008 book on technology and transforming HR. By focusing on the theories
Novel Approaches for Systems Modeling
This e-book contains a collection of finely selected papers on novel ideas of modeling and consequent simulations on various systems across a wide spectrum of topics. These include, agent-based supply chain, distorted images, network security, scheduling in high performance computing system, synchronization of uncertain chaotic systems, complex systems, evolving weighted networks, predictive control of vehicle yaw stability, fresh agricultural products on Weibull distribution, event memory episodic modeling, radar emitter signals, evolutionary event patterns, scheduling of multiproduct batch plants under demand uncertainty, and many others.
This e-book is devoted to the research of Professor Yves Cherruault and his colleagues at MEDIMAT, Université Pierre et Marie Curie – Paris VI, France. Professor Cherruault and his colleagues are already recognised worldwide for their contribution to the fields of mathematical modeling and mathematical methods pertaining to the life sciences. The first section of this e-book deals with methodology, and newly devised versions of the world-acclaimed Adomian and Alienor methods. The second section looks at the applications of these methods to identification and optimal control. The third section lists brief research summaries of current work in progress.
Library Associations Under Threat
Just as the library profession is being challenged by the ‘Google-phenomenon’ so too are library associations. Where the library is being challenged by the breakdown of the ‘physical library’, so too is the library association. When it is clearly the case that the public view of libraries is that they are no longer relevant in a digital age, so we find the library associations searching for relevance. This collection of articles, as well as additional pieces to come in the issues to come, explore the complex analyses and responses by professional colleagues across the globe. The articles explore the local ways in which the profession adapts to change and responds to the same global challenges.
Research in Consumer Behavior
This volume presents recent consumer research across both positivist and interpretivist methods, focusing on topics with considerable current interest. These topics include organic food consumption, luxury goods consumption by Chinese consumers, country of manufacture effects on product quality perceptions, and the nature and effects of cool consumption. The perspectives embraced include managerial strategies, motivational mechanisms, social influences, and product and brand evaluations. Approximately half of the papers in the present volume were selected from those accepted for the 5th Annual Consumer Culture Theory Conference held at the University of Wisconsin in June of 2010. Together this latter set of interpretive papers presenting cutting edge interpretive consumer research. They also add to the richness of the topics covered in the volume, including chapters emphasizing brands, fashions, blogs, service receipt, and consumption experiences. They also add to the methodological scope of the volume, including uses of ethnography, autoethnography, netnography, and discourse analysis. Altogether the volume is a good reflection of what is happening in the field of consumer research.
Supply Chain Management in Health Services
During the last decade, the health care sector has changed rapidly. Due to increased competition, the growing influence of patient-associations and a necessity to deliver health services in a more efficient and effective way, many health care organisations have started projects in the area of patient logistics, clinical pathways, data interchange and vertical integration (Aptel and Pourjalali, 2001). Moreover, the redesign of hospital services and the implementation of integrated care programmes are frequently addressed as being critical strategies to decrease resource utilization and improve health care quality. This e-book contains four papers which explore the complexity of Supply Chain Management in health services. Clearly, much research work needs to be done. All contributing authors emphasize the fact that Supply Chain Management in a health care setting is characterized by some unique features which make it difficult to transfer knowledge from the industrial sector to a health care sector in a direct way. At the same time however, it can be concluded that existing concepts, models and supply chain practices can be extended to Supply Chain Management in health services and existing research underpins the assumption that the health sector can benefit from the lessons learned in the industrial sector. This e-book aims to provide a more thorough understanding of Supply Chain Management in health care services.

New Technology-Based Firms in the New Millennium
This volume is a collection of the best papers presented at the HTSF Conference held at Manchester Business School, UK, in June 2007, from which three major themes have emerged: the critical problems of HTSF financing; aspects of strategic development in HTSFs; and HTSF marketing problems, often in a "born global" strategic context. The New Technology-Based Firms in the New Millenium series provides up to date research on a variety of aspects of High Technology Small Firm formation and growth (HTSFs) from a range of interdisciplinary perspectives and from national contexts throughout the world. This edited book series reflects on and shapes currently popular national government policies insofar as they relate to HTSFs. It is the only international publication specifically dealing with HTSF formation and growth and it uniquely provides an uninterrupted record of research in this area since 1993. This latest volume is a collection of the best papers presented at the HTSF Conference held in the United Kingdom at Manchester Business School in June 2007. Three major themes have emerged. Six particularly strong chapters of this volume are devoted to the critical problems of HTSF financing, comprising two contributions from the United Kingdom and individual chapters from Sweden, the Irish Republic, Italy, and Belgium. A further four papers are concerned with aspects of strategic development in HTSFs, and a final group of three papers deal with HTSF marketing problems, often in a "born global" strategic context.
The Well-Being, Peer Cultures and Rights of Children
These empirical studies include children's voices and experiences from four continents and highlight how structure and culture both limit and enable the life chances of children, how children interpret and construct their social relations and environments, and how children view themselves as well as how others view the rights of children. This volume is comprised of empirical research and theoretical papers within three key areas, namely children's well being, children and youth peer cultures, and the rights of children and youth. These empirical studies include children's voices and experiences from four continents (Asia, Europe, North America and South America) and a range of methodological and theoretical orientations. A clear connection to social policy at a national and international level is made in many of these studies. Topics are wide-ranging and include: Praetorian militarization; school mobility; math and reading achievement gaps; dating and the developmental discourse in a summer camp; and school and social exclusion for urban young people. Altogether, these studies highlight how structure and culture both limit and enable the life chances of children, how children interpret and construct their social relations and environments, and how children view themselves as well as how others view the rights of children. This volume is a further example of how the Sociological Studies of Children and Youth series successfully showcases major strands of current thinking on children and youth in our world today.
