STUDENTS AS COLLATERAL DAMAGE? A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF RENAISSANCE 2010 SCHOOL CLOSINGS
This report outlines findings and recommendations of an initial study of the effects of school closings in the Midsouth. Based on the assumption that people are experts on their own experience, we interviewed teachers, students, administrators, counselors, security guards, and parents in receiving schools – those not generally heard in public discussion about Renaissance 2010. This report seeks to begin to uncover the human dimensions and lived educational consequences of a plan to improve schools by displacing students, educators, and families.

Members of the ProActve Chicago Teachers and School Employees (PACT) caucus of the Chicago Teachers Union, led by former CTU president Deborah Lynch, announced at a press conference on March 22, 2010, that they filled an emergency motion for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against Ron Huberman and the Chicago Public Schools in Federal Court on Monday, March 22nd. The latest PACT action was taken following a series of memos from both Chicago Public Schools 'Chief Executive Officer' Ron Huberman and current CTU president Marilyn Stewart regarding whether union members can meet about union election business, circulate literature, or circulate petitions in the schools. The Huberman and Stewart memos have been limiting access to CTU members by all candidates running the May 2010 CTU election — with the exception of Ms. Stewart.
