INTRODUCTION

A consistent, unified look is crucial to the
marketing efforts of The University of Texas
at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
It is consistency that gives our institution a
distinctive brand.

When all departments use the same design
principles in their advertising, the resulting
synergy strengthens the university’s overall
brand and marketing efforts, increasing public
awareness and positive opinion of the institution
through repetition and recognition. At the same
time, each department’s individual advertising
efforts gain credibility from the association with
the prestige of the institution as a whole.

Ideally, all marketing materials would be both
created and maintained by the same creative
team, but budget and time constraints often
require departments to create some materials on
their own. This brand standards guide provides
instructions and rules to help each department
produce professional-looking materials that
remain consistent with the university’s overall
brand image.

FUNDAMENTALS:

COLORS
Our institution enjoys a lot of equity in the
familiar orange (PMS 159), white and blue

recognition, especially within the region served
by UTB/TSC, is critical. So we have chosen
to showcase these three colors in all of our
collateral materials with orange and white as our
primary colors and blue to be used as an accent.

When used in color on a white or light
background, the type of the UTB/TSC logo
should almost always be blue, and the scorpion
orange. Certain circumstances will necessitate
a variation of this hard and fast rule. When the
logo appears on an orange background, the type
should be blue and the scorpion white. When it

appears on a blue background, the type should
be white and the scorpion orange.

Logo position should be anchored at least .5”
from the margin in the lower right corner. All
logos should appear with a TM as shown in the
adjacent samples.

SCORPION ACCENT
Occasionally, the UTB/TSC scorpion will be used
as an accent icon in creative materials. The
scorpion may be used to highlight a specific
aspect of the piece, or to create a relationship
between distinct components of the piece. It
should appear in orange, black or white and
should always be orientated with the claws
facing upward. Percentages of the school
colors can be used to create a watermark of
the scorpion. The scorpion can also be cropped.
When used this way, the scorpion icon should
remain an accent only. Let “subtlety” be your
watchword.
