Introduction
Explain what will be covered:
o how to create quizzes,
o why create quizzes,
o how to create effective quizzes
Explain structure of course (5 sections, alternating demo with hands-on or
discussion)
Participants log in with own usernames (Quiz training default role is editor)
Part A – Quizzes and questions
Demonstration
Log on as yourself (since you’ll need admin rights) and go to Moodle Training >
Quiz Training.
Go to the Demo Quiz and Preview it. Show the different question types.
Emphasise the distinction between the quiz and the questions – one quiz can have
many questions; one question can be used in many quizzes.
Return to homepage. Right-click on Questions to open question bank in new
window. Indicate the question type icons.
Switch to the Quiz Demo category and show the questions that correspond to the
quiz.
Hands-on
Give out handout A and explain how handouts work
Show where Quiz Training can be found.
Explain that they become editors of Quiz Training by enrolling on it
Part B – Creating questions
Demonstration
From the homepage, click Questions and choose the Default category.
Go to the question bank and preview (but don't attempt) the Slavic Languages
question in the Default category, as an example of a multiple-answer question
(MAQ). Explain that we are going to 'look under the bonnet'.
Edit the question and point out the phrasing of the question text.
Explain that Penalty factor will be covered in the next section.
Indicate the shuffling option and explain how it works in conjunction with the
shuffle setting in the quiz itself.
Point out the One or multiple answers? setting.
Show the correct and incorrect options and explain grading system. Explain why
correct answer grades add up to 100% and incorrect answers add up to -100%.
Go back to preview to show how it works. Try various combinations:
o One correct answer,
o One incorrect answer – note grade is never less than zero,
o All answers ticked.
Point out Moodle Docs link for help with other question types.
Hands-on
Give out Handout B
Part C – Putting a quiz together
Demonstration
Edit the Demo Quiz to highlight specific settings.
Point out Questions per page setting and explain problems with using multiple
pages.
Point out Shuffle within questions option and relate it to the Shuffle option in
individual questions.
Use Demo Quiz (one question at a time) to demonstrate the problem. Make clear
that this only applies to questions as you add them – it will not repaginate
questions after they have been added.
Go back to Demo Quiz and click Edit. Explain question weights and how they are
scaled to give the overall grade.
Hands-on
Give out Handout C
Follow-up
Turn on Adaptive mode and Apply penalties for the Demo Quiz and review how it
works. Refer back to the penalty factor setting in questions.
Part D – Why/how to use quizzes?
Demonstration
Introduce pedagogy, explaining why Moodle quizzes can be useful:
o Formative assessment, self-testing
o Identifying and tackling misconceptions
o Analysis of results to pick up on problems.
Get participants together and discuss why they want to use quizzes and how they
will make use of the results.
Introduce the general knowledge quiz in Quiz Training that they will need to
complete. Point out that the quiz was deliberately made difficult/stupid (no need
for embarrassment later).
Hands-on & discussion
Ask everyone to quickly complete the general knowledge quiz in Quiz Training.
(NB This quiz uses role overrides to allow editors to attempt it.) Allow 4 minutes
for everyone to complete this quiz.
Class discussion: What makes a question good or bad?
o Ambiguity in questions including bad grammar/spelling
o Overly general feedback
o Introduce distracters: too similar/dissimilar to/from the answer
o Incomplete question sets
o Does the question test what students are meant to know/learn?
o Discuss difference and appropriateness of MCQ versus MAQ
o Indelicate feedback: “NO! You are wrong!”
o Sell-by date of questions
Part E – Using the results
Demonstration
Quiz results can be used to review the progress of a single student, a class, or a
whole cohort. They can also be used to review the effectiveness of questions and
quizzes themselves.
Enter the General knowledge quiz and click the Results tab to see the results
from the participants themselves. Review Overview and Item analysis pages.
Introduce the MCQ breakdown page, and show the breakdown of results. Focus
on:
o Summary stats at top
o Student responses – which students are failing, which questions are
causing them problems
o Options chosen – are the distractors distracting enough?
Show the richer MCQ breakdown from EC400 (via link on Quiz Training
homepage)
Click on key to change from correct to incorrect highlights
Any questions, comments? Encourage further discussion.
Extra activity if time permits
Ask each to create a quiz with one or two of their own questions.
