• Individual competitions usually are
related to a class or research project
• Easier implementation – a good way
to gain recognition for ASME at
your school
• More faculty help in terms of
financing

Competition
• Any device that transmits a force or a
motion in a deterministic way to
perform a mechanical task.
• Both undergraduate and graduate
students are eligible
• Individual or group projects
• Initial application in April
• Submission is document describing the
mechanism
Student Manufacturing Design
Competition
• A project may be entered in the competition
by submitting a project description to the
Student Manufacturing Design Competition
Organizer.
• Any design of a system, component, or
process that can be used to promote the art,
science and practice of manufacturing
engineering is acceptable.
• Any undergraduate or graduate student is
eligible
• Go to Manufacturing Technical Division for
more details
Williston Paper Competition
• (2007 3rd place winner from District
F)
• Write a paper on the topic:
– What is the one technology that can be
effective in defense of the homeland?
• Due Feb. 16, 2008
• Current students and graduates
within 2 years are eligible

Competition
– BS, MS, and PhD levels
– Deadline Jan. 31st
• Pressure Vessel and Piping Division

– Deadline Nov. 16th
Technical Divisions
• So, some (but not all) technical divisions
offer activities specifically for students
• Always a good idea to go to your technical
division web page and check it out
• Many of these competitions are for
individuals, so there is less organization
required

Human Powered Vehicle
Challenge
• Design an aerodynamic, recumbent
highly engineered vehicle equipped
with a hard shell fairing (body).
– Design event (written and oral)
– Safety testing
– Sprint
– Endurance race
• Vehicle must have male and female
rider

• Don’t start at the last minute
ASME Auxiliary Scholarships
• Different application from regular ASME
scholarships
• Application on ASME web site

• Available for rising sophomores/
juniors/seniors/graduate students
• In 2006, 28 $2000 scholarships were awarded
• Ten $5000 scholarships were awarded to students
who participated in FIRST robotics in high school
Technical Division Scholarships
• Petroleum Institute Scholarships -
$2000, requires 2.5 GPA, rising
sophomores / juniors/seniors ($10k
for graduate students) – Deadline
March 15th
• Gas Turbine Institute Scholarships –
by invitation during certain years
• Check for others based on your
technical interest

Clarke Scholarships for Fall
’08 Freshmen
• Application due October 20th
• $6k for your department to award to new freshmen
– typically 3 $2000 scholarships
• Typically not many applications
• Application available on Auxiliary web site
• Selection based on participation in ASME
competitions: Old Guard, Ingersoll Rand, etc.
• Letter of recommendation from Department Head

• National Academy for Nuclear Training
Scholarship Program -- $2500/yr renewable for
2 years
• Dept of Homeland Security Scholarships --
$9000 plus tuition renewable for 2 years

• There are a variety of scholarship
opportunities available for your
members
• It would be great if every student
section in District F had someone
receive a scholarship
• You can’t win if you don’t play!
• Encourage your members to apply!
Internships
• WISE – Washington Interns in
Science and Engineering
• Related to policy
• Low-paying summer internship in
Washington DC
• Applications in the latter part of fall
semester
Conclusion
• There are all sorts of ways to seek
fame and fortune with ASME!
• There are numerous competitions
that were not covered here and
obscure scholarship opportunities
abound
• Use your network to find out about
these opportunities!
