11   INVITING THE UNITED STATES SURGEON GENERAL AND
12   ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR HEALTH, THE CHIEF
13   HEALTH OFFICIAL      FOR THE COUNTRY, THE
14   HONORABLE DAVID SATCHER, M.D., PH.D., TO ADDRESS
15   THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN JOINT SESSION AT 12:30
16   P.M. ON TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 2000.

18   Whereas, the Honorable David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D. is the 16th
19   Surgeon General of the United States and the Assistant Secretary
20   for Health; and
21
22   Whereas, the Honorable David Satcher has served as the Director
23   of the prestigious Centers for the Disease Control and Prevention
24   (CDC), the agency responsible for promoting health and
25   preventing disease, injury, and premature death; and
26
27   Whereas, during his tenure at CDC, Dr. Satcher spearheaded
28   initiatives that increased childhood immunization rates nationally;
29   and
30
31   Whereas, under Dr. Satcher’s direction, the CDC placed a greater
32   emphasis on disease prevention and highlighted the importance of
33   physical activity and good health by encouraging Americans to
34   become more physically active in the landmark Surgeon General’s
35   Report on Physical Activity and Health; and
36
37   Whereas, Dr. Satcher has served as the President of Meharry
38   Medical College; and
39
40   Whereas, the Surgeon General serves as the chief health officer
41   and the national spokesperson on matters of public health and
42   prevention; and

 1   Whereas, public health interventions impact the lives of
 2   individuals and populations statewide and worldwide; and
 3
 4   Whereas, speaking before a joint session of the General Assembly
 5   is an honor reserved for leaders of national prominence. Now,
 6   therefore,

 8   Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
 9   concurring:

11   That the Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary for Health for
12   the United States of America, the Honorable David Satcher, is
13   invited to address the General Assembly in Joint Session in the
14   Hall of the House of Representatives at 12:30 P.M. on Tuesday,
15   March 7, 2000.

17   Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
18   the Honorable David Satcher.
