4. Frequently Asked Questions
I have not booked, can I still come along?
Newcastle University welcomes any visitors to our campus and
we will do our utmost to ensure you get the most from your time
with us. Please visit us at the designated meeting point and,
pending space, we will endeavour to get you on a campus tour.
Where can we park?
Please refer to http://www.ncl.ac.uk/travel/info/car/parking.php
for information on parking within Newcastle. Parking on
Campus is very limited.
How do I get to Newcastle University from the train station/
airport?
The campus has the advantage of being located in the city
centre and therefore supported by Newcastle’s Metro system.
The Metro has stations at both the airport and train station. We
advise all visitors to disembark at Haymarket Metro Station as it
is the closest to the University campus.
From the Haymarket Metro Station you will need to cross the
pedestrian crossing facing the Church and stay to the left before
crossing the road opposite Campus Coffee and Blackwells.
The Student Union is to the right of Campus Coffee and up the
steps in front of you.
For those who wish to walk from Central Station there is
adequate signage to the University and you should allow 20 -
30 minutes. The walk is not recommended for those with
limited mobility. Please refer to
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/travel/maps/navigator_custom.php?t=3&b=
11&l=5&r=9 for a detailed map.
14
Please refer to http://www.ncl.ac.uk/travel/info/ for more
information, including links to the Metro website.
Is there anywhere we can stay overnight?
You can obtain accommodation guides from the Newcastle
Tourist Information Office:
The Guildhall, Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne
Open: Monday - Friday 9.30am - 5pm
Saturday 9am - 5pm
Sunday 9am - 4pm.
Phone: 0191 277 8000
E-mail: tourist.info@newcastle.gov.uk
Castle Leazes Halls of Residence offers limited places for Bed
and Breakfast, please ring 0191 222 8368/8362 for availability
and more information.
What is the weather like? What should we wear?
We advise all visitors to wear comfortable footwear and check
www.bbc.co.uk/weather before visiting.
How much walking will be involved?
Campus Tours last approximately 1 hour and do not involve any
form of transportation. The starting and meeting point is within
a 5 minute walk from Haymarket Metro station and the City
Centre.
From the Haymarket Metro Station you will need to cross the
pedestrian crossing facing the Church and stay to the left before
crossing the road opposite Campus Coffee and Blackwells.
The Student Union is to the right of Campus Coffee and up the
steps in front of you.
15
Is there anywhere to eat on campus?
The campus provides a good selection of places where you can
get a bite to eat, whether it’s a snack or meal. The university
and Students’ Union have been granted Fairtrade status
meaning an increasing number of Fairtrade products are
available. For more information on where to eat please visit
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/food.phtml. Please note
that opening times for venues within The Union building are
subject to change during University holidays.
Is it usual for students to bring their parents along and how
many people can I bring?
We are more than happy to accommodate parents as well
as students on campus, but we do ask for students to limit the
number of guests to one if possible on the Campus Tour. We
like to ensure as many students can enjoy the tour as possible
but guest numbers can be reviewed on the day.
If I am running late is it still ok to come?
The city and campus is still a fantastic place to visit without a
campus tour! However, we will always try and find a place for
you on the next available tour. We do provide a ‘Walk without
the talk’ guide if you wish to tour the campus in your own time.
