Beauty salons and spas on board most of the luxury cruise ships offer passengers full service treatments ranging from aroma and aqua-spas, body wraps and mud baths, to facials, massages and hair do's. Even the smaller and older cruise ships are now paying more attention to the highest quality beauty salon / spa services and fitness programs on board, resulting in an ever growing need for beauty, skin care and fitness professionals. Onboard salons and spas are either run in-house or by a concessionaire company who are responsible for hiring of the following cruise ship job positions: beauty salon / spa manager, assistant beauty salon / spa manager, hair stylist / hairdresser, barber, beauty therapist / beautician, nail technician, acupuncturist, massage therapist and fitness instructor / personal trainer. The salons are equipped with the latest in beauty technology and it is the responsibility of the staff to put it to good use promoting treatments and pampering passengers. Hours can sometimes be long, especially on formal nights , which usually fall on a sea day. Wages vary according to your experience and area of expertise, the cruise line, size and itineraries of the cruise ship, but are however, supplemented by tips and commission from product sales. Beauty Salon / Spa Manager - the beauty salon / spa manager oversees the entire operations envelope of the beauty salon and spa divison aboard the cruise ship. The beauty salon / spa manager is responsible for managing and onboard training of the beauty salon/spa staff in order to ensure that the cruise line’s highest standards of service are met. She / he is also responsible for improving the beauty salon / spa personnel’s ability to achieve and exceed company sales goals through highly developed promotional and visual skills, as well as development of the abilities of the staff – massage therapists, beauty therapists, hair stylists, nail technicians and acupuncturists to promote successfully their services and certain products among guests. Some of the Beauty Salon/Spa Managers are promoted within the company, however candidates possessing the necessary organizational and leadership skills with land based salon / spa managerial experience will be considered for hiring. Requirements: Extensive Beauty Salon / Spa managerial experience required. Cruise ship, resort or hotel professional background preferred. Excellent verbal and written command of the English language required. Salary range: $3800-6700 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line, comission, size and itineraries of the cruise ship and also on the overal performance / sales results of the ship's Beauty Salon / Spa department. Assistant Beauty Salon / Spa Manager - the assistant beauty salon / spa manager is responsible for supervising the day to day operations of the beauty salon / spa department aboard the cruise ship as directed by the beauty salon / manager. She / he is in charge of the close monitoring of the beauty salon /spa personnel's daily sales performance results, condition of treatment rooms, supply of products and consumatives needed for the various body, skin and hair treatments and procedures. The assistant beauty salon / spa manager is expected to assist and support beauty salon / spa staff members in providing the highest possible services to guests and in achieving their personal sales goals. In many cases the assistant beauty salon / spa managers are promoted within the company after fulfilling at least one contract at sea and demonstrating the skills and personal qualities required for the position, however - beauty salon and managerial experience required. Salary range: $3000-5500 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line, comission, size and itineraries of the cruise ship. Possibilities for promotion to Salon Manager. Beauty Therapist - beauty therapists aboard a cruise ship could work as a skin care specialist, body and detox specialist and a holistic therapist. She/he would provide facial massage and skin care, facial electrical treatments, makeup application, lash and brow treatments, wax depilation, body electrical and mechanical treatments. The cruise ship beauty therapist must posses also excellent sales and communication skills in order to be able to book guests for tailored services and provide professional advise. Hair Stylist / Hairdresser - the hair stylist / hairdresser aboard a cruise ship offers the services available in land based salon for all of types of hair, on both ladies and gentlemen - cut hair using basic techniques, style hair using drying and setting techniques, shampoo and condition hair and scalp, dry hair into shape and create a finished look, change hair colour. It is also important that hair stylists can cope with both a busy column and a demanding clientele. Massage Therapist - must be qualified in Swedish Massage. Any additional qualifications like Aromatherapy, Shiatsu, Reflexology, Reiki Healing or Sports Therapy is a definite plus Nail Technician - completion of a Nail Technician training course required. A nail technician aboard a cruise ship must have a qualification in Manicure and Pedicure equivalent to NVQ Level 2 and the ability to do a full set of ACRYLIC nails including French polish. . Acupuncturist - a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Acupuncture and/or Chinese Medicine required. Any additional courses/certifications such as: Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation, Tui Na, Chinese Herbs, Electro-Acupuncture, Cranio-Sacral are a plus but not essential. Good command of the English language required. Salary range: $3200-5300 U.S. per month, depending on gratuities, comission, size and itineraries of the cruise ship and on the cruise line. Fitness Instructor / Personal Trainer -the personal trainer / fitness isntructor aboard a cruise ship must be knowledgeable of all fitness offerings at the spa and hold current certifications. Must have a recognised National Certification in personal training, an excerise to music qualiification is prefered but not essential. Fitness Instructors are required to take a variety classes, supervise the gymnasium and also offer Personal Training to guests. Exercise To Music (ETM), Yoga and Pilates qualifications preferable (not essential), with at least 6 months working experience. Good command of the English language required. Salary range: $1900-2800 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line.
