					           TRANSITION TO PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE – GRADUATE NURSE PROGRAM
Thank you for your interest in the Graduate Nurse Program at Flinders Medical Centre.

Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) is a leading public teaching hospital and trauma centre in Adelaide, South
Australia. FMC is a specialist referral centre with specialty services including emergency and trauma care,
peri-operative, intensive and critical care, paediatrics, neonatology, mental health and a broad range of
medical and surgical specialities.

On site facilities include a staff health and fitness centre and a 60 place childcare centre catering for FMC
and Flinders University staff and the general community. Set on large natural grounds the childcare centre
is open 6.30 am to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday. For further details please contact the Director on telephone

The following information has been provided to help you understand what our program can offer you as you
start your nursing career.

There will be approximately 90 Graduate Nurse positions available in 2011 and six intakes are scheduled
from January to March 2011.

Flinders Medical Centre Graduate Nurse Program Information Sessions will be held on:
    Tuesday 6 July 2010, 2:30pm – 4:30pm
    Wednesday 7 July 2010, 10:30am – 12:30pm

PROGRAM AIMS
To provide the novice Registered Nurse with guided learning experiences and clinical support that
consolidate and extend the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for successful transition to the role of
an advanced beginner Registered Nurse working in an acute care environment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
   Demonstrate a development in clinical competence related to holistic care, as stated in the ANMC
   National Competencies.
   Provide safe nursing care by following legislative regulations and organisational policies relevant to
   fulfilling duty of care obligations.
   Display developing clinical assessment skills appropriate for an advanced beginner level Registered
   Nurse.
   Develop time management strategies to facilitate a planned approach to nursing care including efficient
   patient outcomes.
   Articulate advanced beginner reflective practice skills and initiate a problem solving approach to
   practice.
   Provide holistic nursing care by participating in professional and ethical decision making, related to
   patient advocacy and patient management issues.
   Apply principles of evidence based care to nursing management of patients within the acute care
   setting.
   Demonstrate an increase in decision making skills which promotes increased participation within the
   collaborative health care team.
   Accept responsibility for own performance development within the context of an acute care nursing
   organisation.

Successful completion of the program is achieved through active participation at all paid program
days and satisfactory achievement of Clinical Learning Contracts, Unit Coordination Reflective
Paper and Performance Development Plans.
ELIGIBILITY
   1. If you have completed or are due to complete a Bachelor of Nursing this year and are eligible/will
       be eligible for registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia you are eligible to apply.
   2. If you have completed a Bachelor of Nursing within the last two years, registered with the Nursing
       & Midwifery Board of Australia, and have worked as a Registered Nurse for less than 12 months,
       you are eligible to apply.

VISA REQUIREMENTS
Only Australian citizens and New Zealand citizens who have entered Australia on a valid passport,
have unrestricted rights to employment.
If you are on a Student Visa, you will need to have an appropriate working visa that allows employment.
You are advised that permanent residency status will increase eligibility for the Graduate Nurse Program,
however sponsorship for a temporary visa will be considered.

PROGRAM OUTLINE
Graduate Nurses receive a minimum of 9 paid supernumerary days comprising:
     - Hospital (2 days) and division (1 day) orientation
     - One unit based orientation day for both first and second clinical placement
     - Three days for theory and clinical learning activities
     - One day for experience in clinical unit coordination
Experienced Clinical Nurses are specifically employed to provide teaching, guidance and support to all
Graduate Nurses during their clinical placements, while a PEER Support group in each clinical unit will help
you to achieve your professional development goals.

Graduate Nurses will undertake two clinical placements. You have an opportunity to indicate/request your
preference for placement. Clinical placements at FMC include:
     - Medical nursing including Respiratory, Cardiac, Renal, Endocrinology, Dermatology,
        Rheumatology, Acute Stroke Rehabilitation and Aged Care;
     - Surgical nursing including Orthopaedic, Plastic, Gastrointestinal, Oncology, Neurology, Vascular,
        Haematology, High Dependency, and Day Surgery;
     - Specialties such as Intensive and Critical Care, Cardiac Care, Emergency, Mental Health,
        Neonatal, Paediatric, Peri-operative Care.

OPTIONAL PATHWAYS WITHIN GNP
There are a number of optional pathways for the Flinders Medical Centre “Transition to Professional
Practice – Graduate Nurse Program” including:

FMC Program: Graduate Nurses undertake 2 x clinical placements at FMC.
FMC/NHS (Noarlunga Health Services) Program: Graduate Nurses undertake a clinical placement at
both NHS and FMC.
FMC/CYWHS (Women’s and Children’s Hospital) Program: Graduate Nurses undertake a clinical
placement at both WCH and FMC.

FMC/Flinders University integrated Honours program:
*Applicants must lodge separate applications to FMC (GNP) and to Flinders University (Honours program).

WORKING AT FLINDERS
Graduate Nurses are appointed on a twelve-month temporary employment contract. Full time and part time
contracts are available. Salaries are paid in accordance with the Nurses (SA Public Sector) Award 2002
and Nurses/Midwives (SA Public Sector) Enterprise Agreement 2007. You will accrue six weeks of paid
annual leave (based on a 7 day roster). Two weeks annual leave can be negotiated mid year. Hours of
duty follow a 4 week roster cycle, and include morning, afternoon and night shifts.

SALARY SACRIFICE
Staff can reduce taxable income by salary sacrifice arrangement for up to 50% per annum, from pre-tax

Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) provides the opportunity for Graduate Nurses to choose from a number of
optional pathways within the Graduate Nurse Program.
