QUESTION 2 ON THE EXAMINATION PAPER IN

JUNE, 2009
The topic for the Research Element is:
Holiday and Travel Mathematics

Candidates will be expectedc'to be able to answer questions on the mmhematics involved in planning a
holiday. Candidates should be able to interpret and work with information from sources such as holiday
in holiday and travel mathematics: single supplement, deposit, insurance, per person sharing, high/low
season, maximum occupancy, etc.
~
In particular, candidates may be asked to do some or all of the following in the examination:
• Interpret information as it might be presented in holiday brochures
• Calculate costs such as car hire, insurance supplements, etc.
• Calculate the cost of accommodation in hotels, rented accommodation, campsites, etc.
• Interpret information from timetables or schedules (rail, road, sea, and air)
• Estimate travel times by car, and plan departure, arrival and connection times
• Convert between the euro and other currencies, including:
ouse of buy and sell rates (where the agent's profit is built into the rate) and/or
o applying commission in various forms, such as a percentage subject to a minimum charge, etc.
• Estimate cost of meals and other goods and services in euro and in other currencies, so as to judge
value for money, and to enable budgeting for a trip
•. Prepare a budget for a holiday to include travel costs, accommodation, and spending money
• Calculate the time in other time zones relative to the time in Ireland
• Interpret climate charts, graph and tables, and have sufficient knowledge of Irish climate so as to be
able to make comparative statements such as "this is like a hot summer day in Ireland", or to make
suggestions regarding suitable clothing or activities for the place concerned at a given time of year
• Convert temperatures between Fahrenheit and Celsius using conversion tables or given formulae.

It is suggested that students work with authentic documents, real climatic information, and up-to-date
accommodation costs, exchange rates, etc. Suitable activities include investigating the relative merits of a
package holiday as against a self-organised holiday, using the internet to compare costs between different
airlines flying to the same destination, comparing the merits of taking a ferry with fly-drive options, etc.

Sources of information and ideas for work on this topic might include:
• Teaching resources for: LCA Hotel Catering and Tourism Specialism; JC Business; JC Geography
• Teachers of business subjects and geography
• Local bank/credit union/bureau de change
'. Local tourist office and local travel agents
• Timetables for bus/rail/air/sea
• Websites: tour companies and travel agents, ferry companies, airlines, consumer websites of tourist
boards invarious countries, including www.discoverireland.ie and www.discovernorthernireland.com.

2 A flight leaves Dublin Airport at 2-30 pm and takes 7.5 hours before landing in
New York. What time is it on arrival in New York

3 A flight from Sydney leaves at 4pm on Tuesday makes a two hour stop over in
Singapore on its way to London. If it is in the air for a total of 16 hours, what time
does it arrive in London?

4 When it is midnight in one of the cities above it is noon in the other. Write down
the names of the two cities

5 If you were flying to Berlin which has a time difference with Dublin of one hour,
would you put your watch forward or back to ensure that you were reading local
time when you arrived?

6 You wanted to ring your cousin in Sydney when it is 7pm in Sydney. What time
would you ring him from Ireland?
From the time zone map locate the following cities and give the time in each
when it is 5pm on Tuesday in Dublin:

City
Time
Helsinki Sydney
Djakarta Rome

For various reasons (daylight saving time, not splitting parts of a country into
two zones, etc) you should now examine the map a little more carefully. Give
the times in the following locations, when it is 5am in Cork:

Location
Time
Moscow Shanghai

Tashkent Saigon

You are travelling from London on a number of occasions during
the year. From the given information complete the chart below.
