Purpose
The year 2008 offers a great opportunity to bring population and development issues more effectively into policy dialogue on with the Japan-hosted G8 Summit in July and Tokyo International Conference African Development (TICAD) IV in May.

At both events, health issues and African development are included as the main themes, and this two-day parliamentary Conference will correlate to these themes by focusing on population and development issues such as attaining health related MDGs as a cornerstone for African Development and the global impact of climate change and its interrelationship with population issues. Under the recognition that parliamentarians play an important role in mobilizing financial and political support of population issues, this parliamentary Conference will also offer a valuable platform for parliamentarians from G8 countries, Europe, Asia and Africa to discuss the MDG progress and equip them with the tools and knowledge necessary to further their steps toward advancing the MDGs, given 2008 marks the mid-point of the 2015 deadline for meeting the Goals. It is anticipated that a declaration that clearly
parliamentarians from both donor and aid recipient countries will be one of the outcomes of the project as an advocacy tool for parliamentarians.

Development follows on from the past three G8 parliamentary conferences held in conjunction with the G8-Presidency in Germany (2007), Russia (2006) and the UK (2005). In 2007 the
