A supervisor is the person who directly supervises work activities, has direct responsibility for putting people to work and briefs
workers under their control on how to carry out their work safely.
Supervisors are required to have sufficient knowledge of health and safety gained from a construction specific training course of at
least two days duration (see over for minimum content requirements).
A supervisor must have sufficient ability to be effective and be able to demonstrate they have attended a training course that covers
behavioural issues, leadership and effective intervention and effective delivery of task briefings, toolbox talks, etc…
Managers will be required to hold the CITB 5 day Site Managers Safety Training Scheme or equivalent qualification.

Supervisors must have the ability to demonstrate that they have satisfied the following two key criteria:

Courses must incorporate a form of testing with supervisors successfully passing the test issued with a
pass certificate.


Criteria 2 – requires supervisors to have sufficient skills to be an effective supervisor of their workers and
to be able to demonstrate having attended training which includes an understanding of behavioural
issues, leadership and effective intervention skills. This training must include delivering effective
presentations (e.g. tool box talks), role-play and have a form of testing with successful supervisors issued
with a certificate to demonstrate a suitable standard has been achieved.
