(PSAC) Dixon Trophy for the 2005-06 academic year. The trophy is presented on an annual
basis to the league’s most successful all-around program.
The Dixon Trophy is named after F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of the Board of
Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. It is awarded annually to the
PSAC member institution that accumulates the most points based on results of conference play-
offs and/or regular-season records. Each institution’s point total is calculated by adding its top
six men’s finishes and top six women’s finishes in 21 conference sports.
Pictured above are several representatives of Kutztown University’s athletic teams accept-

                      Golden Bear Tradition
The tradition we know as Kutztown University football today began
more than 100 years ago, when KU was known as Keystone Normal
School. Keystone won all five games it played during the initial 1895
season, including a 10-4 win over Reading High School. The school fielded
a team until 1905, when the sport was suspended due to a serious on-field
injury. In 1923, football became, for the most part, a permanent fixture
                                 of the campus
Those initial seasons set the foundation for football and athletics
in general at KU. The early teams were nicknamed the “Golden Ava-
lanche,” and featured many competitive players and teams. The current
nickname of “Golden Bears” was adopted in 1961.
Since then, KU has had its share of prominent players who have
received national attention and fame on the football field. Additionally,
numerous Golden Bears have gone on to successful coaching, teaching,
business and many other careers. The individuals listed on this and
the following pages are prime examples of the many fine men who call
