                                           Atmosphere
                                          Carrie Vollmer

What are the levels of the atmosphere?
Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere (ionosphere), exosphere,
magnetosphere

What is above 80 km in the troposphere?
        The ionosphere

What role does the troposphere have in our lives?
Gives us weather, oxygen and clouds

What does the stratosphere do for us?
Absorbs ultraviolet radiation, protects us from skin cancer and other health damage.

What does the thermosphere do for humans?
Absorbs ultraviolet and X-ray radiation from the sun

What does the ionosphere do for humans?
       Reflects and absorbs radio waves

Why is the sky blue?
The sky is seen as blue because oxygen redirects sunlight and blue is the color it scatters
first due to its high frequency.

When is the sky the bluest?
Between the hours of 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. looking at a 45 degree angle with your back to
the sun.

What makes the sky turn a different color at night?
The sun has to go through more atmosphere at night. The oxygen is still going to scatter
the blue (high frequency) light first leaving the oranges and reds to be scattered closest to the
Earth's surface.

Where is the troposphere the thinnest?
       At the poles

What causes ozone depletion?
Chlorofluorocarbons, vehicles, industries, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, lead and
hazardous air pollutants

Which layer is depleting the fastest?
The stratosphere is beginning to show holes

What are the bands called in the magnetosphere?
       The Van Allen radiation belts
