Dreamers
Wanted
A FP, first and foremost, is about people. It’s about
people who dare to dream of ways to make the world
a better place. It’s about people who are able to connect
those dreamers together to turn something bravely
imagined into something generously funded and effectively
realized.
We are here because we have passion. Our job as
fundraisers is to encourage the people around us to give
resources to something greater. We are here because the
organizations we serve do something for the world that
improves it, plain and simple.
Together we hone our craft and build a profession, and Roberta A. Healey,
                                                               MBA, NHA, ACFRE
believe in doing good for others in a way that is admirable. Chair, 2009–2010
That is what an ethical standard is all about.
AFP’s worth is measured by every kind phone call made
by a fundraiser, every gift generously donated, every note
of thanks and every smile that a donor has when shaking
hands with people whose lives she touched.
We believe people have the power to make anything
happen. We inspire them every day to invest in a dream and
partner with organizations with the capacity to make real
and lasting results.
For 50 years we at AFP have come together and Andrew Watt,
accomplished more than we could on our own, and as FInstF
                                                               President and CEO
you’ll see in these pages, 2010 was no different. 2011–
What is your connection to AFP? Take a look at what
we do. It might be stronger than you thought.

Connections
A t AFP, fundraising professionals come
together under a common framework of
ethics and the desire to not only increase their
own skills and knowledge but also strengthen
a profession that is critical to the health and
vitality of nonprofit organizations.
Every member signs the Code of Ethical
Principles and Standards, a set of ethical
guidelines that was first drafted when AFP
was founded. The guidelines help to ensure
that fundraisers hold themselves to the highest
standard of practice and treat donors with
utmost care.

It’s important to give. But it’s also important to
give wisely. With thousands of charities to choose
from, how can you know that your money is being
used appropriately and will have the greatest impact?
Go to www.afpnet.org/GivingHeart to learn more about
AFP’s public awareness campaign.

AFP brings value and credibility to the fundraising profession, and it
ensures that there is a talented pool of people serving charities and
sharing their experience throughout the U.S., Canada and around the
world. I would not be doing what I do today if it were not for AFP.

50 Years of Moving Forward
T he world is not the same place it

            members and volunteer leaders, and
later a professional staff, have all helped to shape
and guide fundraising to where it is today.
Fifty years is a milestone. It is a chance to stop and
see just how far we’ve come. More professionals benefit

            By forging connections, AFP
makes the world a better place.
Here’s to the next 50 years

Thank you for your service to AFP!

A FP has a long and distinguished history with a variety
of talented paid and volunteer leaders contributing to
this illustrious past. One of the most outstanding, by any
measure, is Paulette Maehara. I was impressed with her
from the moment our paths crossed. She was energetic,

for all of us. Of course, she would say all of our leadership
made this happen ... and to a great extent that would
be true. But it takes a dynamo to move and change the

n The ethics curriculum strategic initiative will
fund the creation of a formal standardized ethics
curriculum. Ethics was the cornerstone of AFP’s
creation and continues to be at the heart of
     everything AFP does.
n The fund for the future, a legacy and
endowment-type giving option, is for donors who
want their gifts to have a more permanent aspect.

“The 50th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign offered AFP members
and chapters a unique opportunity to say thank-you to our fundraising
profession and to help keep AFP strong as it moves forward into a new era
of promoting ethical and effective fundraising,” said Gary L. Good, CFRE,
senior executive for special campaigns at the Pacific Symphony in Irvine,
Calif., and chair of the campaign. “Our thanks to everyone who made a
donation.”
