Chapter 1: Nasuni Filer Overview and Additional Requirements

What is Nasuni Filer?
Nasuni Filer is a virtual network-attached storage (NAS) appliance that runs on a virtualization
platform. It uses local caching and snapshot algorithms to provide general purpose NAS primary
    storage with added protection.
Nasuni Filer monitors the cache and directs traffic to the cloud. You simply select your cloud vendor,
manage your volumes and performance, and use your file protection tools using the web browser
interface. Nasuni Filer provides primary storage for files plus the snapshots necessary to eliminate the
    need for separate backup/restore procedures.

Major Features
Automatic Provisioning
Nasuni delivers unlimited storage in the cloud from trusted cloud storage providers. Your capacity
expands automatically with your increasing needs. Files can be divided among multiple storage
    providers. Benefits include:
        • No storage provisioning is needed
        • Capacity adjusts in line with your needs
        • Eliminates the problem of under-utilized hardware
        • Use your own provider credentials or have Nasuni aquire credentials for you
        • Pay only for what you use

8 Nasuni Filer Installation Guide
                                                                                                  Major Features

Snapshot File Protection Technology
Snapshots capture your entire file system on a hourly basis by default. De-duplicated snapshots are
saved to the cloud — safely offsite, yet accessible. Roll back to any point in the life of a file, directory, or
 file system. Benefits include:
      • Easily find, view, and recover files from any point in history
      • Dispatch restore requests quickly
      • Restore files or whole directories instantly
      • Eliminate backup and restore schemes for files

Bring in Your Own Credentials
      • If you have an existing account with a cloud storage provider, you can use those credentials
with the Nasuni Filer when creating your cloud volume. This allows you to maintain your own
relationship with your cloud storage provider but still use Nasuni Filer.

Fast Restore
In a restore, Nasuni Filer retrieves metadata from the cloud first, so you can identify and pull needed
 files immediately. Benefits include:
      • Maintain business continuity in the event of a major data center failure or natural disaster
      • Save money by maintaining user productivity

High Performance Caching
Nasuni Filer has a large, automatic cache that keeps copies of your working set in your local storage
infrastructure for fast access. Changes to these copies are de-duplicated, compressed, chunked, and
sent to the cloud, keeping your file set in the cloud up-to-date. Benefits include:
      • File access happens at local speeds
      • Cloud traffic is WAN optimized
      • Leverage the advantages of the cloud while maintaining local performance

End-to-End Encryption
Nasuni Filer encrypts your data at your premises, using OpenPGP with AES-256; the data remains
encrypted in the cloud. Escrow your encryption keys with Nasuni or a trusted third-party or generate
and store your own. Benefits include:
      • Data is secure and never visible to Nasuni or the cloud providers
      • You are in control of your encryption keys

All-in-One File Storage and Protection
      • Nasuni stores and protects, delivering unlimited storage to the cloud. Files are inherently safe
in a disaster. Your files are protected even further with snapshots and frequent updates that
          are saved to the cloud.

Nasuni Filer Installation Guide 9
Chapter 1: Nasuni Filer Overview and Additional Requirements

Multiple Cloud Option
     • Choose a cloud provider or divide files among providers based on cost, compliance, or other
needs. Your files are still displayed together locally on one file server. Your bill is still simple
         and consolidated.

Well-Known Cloud Providers
     • Nasuni’s cloud providers have all passed rigorous testing for speed and reliability. They all
have redundant architectures and data centers in multiple locations. Tight security schemes
and contingency plans protect centers from hacking and sabotage. Floor space and power
usage are optimized for the greenest configuration.

Pay-As-You-Go
     • Nasuni charges a monthly rate for Nasuni Filer based on your capacity usage, regardless of
how many users you have. Billing is consolidated from your cloud providers. Nasuni does not
         mark up rates.

Built-in Simplicity
     • Nasuni Filer works with your existing infrastructure, maintains the look and feel of NAS and
uses CIFS. You can download Nasuni Filer and install it quickly. The web browser interface is
intuitive and the configuration is fast. The steps for creating a new cloud volume and defining
shares are easy and provisioning is automatic.

Components
Nasuni Filer consists of the following components:
     • Nasuni Filer — the virtual appliance that serves as an NAS device and can be mounted and
         used as a file system.
     • Web browser interface — the graphical user interface that you login to for accessing the

Using Credentials Provided by Nasuni
The default credentials setting for a cloud storage provider is set to be automatically provisioned by
Nasuni. This means that Nasuni Filer automatically configures an account for you with unique
credentials. This account then belongs to you.
If you already have an account with a cloud storage provider and want to use your own credentials, see
“Configuring Your Own Cloud Provider Credentials” on page 51 for details.
For example, if you select Amazon S3 as your cloud storage provider, the Select Initial Cloud Storage
 Provider page appears as follows:

To use credentials provided by Nasuni:
   1. Leave the Credentials listbox with the default of Automatically Provisioned.
   2. Select a region (Europe, Asia Pacific, or USA West) where you want to store your data from the
Region listbox. You should store your data in a Region that is near to your customers and data
centers to reduce data access latencies. The region you select should be remote from your other
operations for geographic redundancy and disaster recovery purposes.
   3. From the Redundancy listbox, you can select “Standard Redundancy” (enabled by default) or
“Reduced Redundancy Storage (RRS).” RRS is a storage option (for Amazon S3 only) that
reduces costs by storing non-critical, reproducible data at lower levels of redundancy than
Standard Redundancy. It provides a cost-effective, highly available solution for distributing or

sharing content that is durably stored elsewhere, or for storing thumbnails, transcoded media, or
other processed data that can be easily reproduced.
     4. Click Finish to proceed.
The Welcome to Nasuni Filer message box appears. Your first volume is automatically created
with a file share named “files.”

     5. See “Mapping a Network Drive” on page 55 for details on mapping to this share.
     6. Click the x in the right-hand corner to close the Welcome message box. The Nasuni Filer Home
Page appears and is shown in the next section.

50 Nasuni Filer Installation Guide
                                                                                  Setting Up Nasuni Filer

Configuring Your Own Cloud Provider Credentials
If you have an existing account with a cloud storage provider, you can use those credentials with the
Nasuni Filer when creating your cloud volume. This allows you to maintain your own relationship with
your cloud storage provider but still use Nasuni Filer.
To configure your own cloud provider credentials:
   1. During Step 4 of setup (see “Step 4: Select a Cloud Storage Provider” on page 48), select
Provide my own credentials from the Credentials box in the Select Initial Cloud Storage
        Provider page.
In the following example, Amazon S3 is selected:

   2. Select Provide my own credentials from the Credentials listbox.

Chapter 2: Installing Nasuni Filer

The Add Credentials page appears. In this example, for Amazon S3.

     3. Enter a unique name for the set of credentials in the Name box.
     4. Enter the appropriate information such access key, secret key, username, or application name.
These values differ based on the cloud provider that you select.
     5. Accept the default hostname in the Hostname box or enter a new hostname. This hostname
specifies the location of the cloud storage provider. The default value is set to a publicly
accessible version of the cloud storage provider you selected. If you are using an API-
compatible instance of this cloud (self hosted or hosted elsewhere), you should change this value
to point to the new host. Due to security restrictions, the host must be protected via SSL. You
can use self-signed certificates if required by unchecking the "Verify SSL Certificates” checkbox.
     6. Click Submit and your credentials are verified. Your first cloud volume is then created using
these credentials. Your first volume is automatically created with a file share named “files.” See
“Mapping a Network Drive” on page 55 for details on mapping to this share.

Chapter 3: Mapping a Network Drive

Overview
This chapter explains how to map a network drive on a file server in your network for use with Nasuni
Filer. Once you map a network drive, you can get up and running quickly with Nasuni Filer and start
using it on your network as a NAS device.

                                                                                                   55
Chapter 3: Mapping a Network Drive

Mapping a Network Drive
To start using Nasuni Filer, you need to map a network share to the machine in which you want to run
 and use it on.
You can set network share privileges for users on your network from the web browser interface. See
“Shares Page” on page 45 in the Nasuni Filer Users Guide for instructions.
 To map a network drive:
     1. Right-click on My Computer.
     2. Select Map Network Drive.

     3. Select an available drive letter for which to map from the Drive drop-down. An unused drive is
          automatically selected.
     4. Select a shared folder or the IP address of your Nasuni Filer from the Folder listbox for mapping
the network drive or click Browse to navigate to the IP address or URL within in your
          neighborhood network. For example, \\10.1.10.97\files.
Note: You need to have share privileges to access the folder and map it. See “Shares Page”
on page 45 for more details.
     5. Click Finish.
Tip: Alternatively, you can enter the path for the share folder or IP address in Windows
Explorer instead of using the Map Network Drive dialog box.
     6. Go to the drive in which you mapped. For example:

     7. Open the drive and drag and drop files that you want to send to the cloud. You can now open
these files and do your work from this folder. By default, snapshots are taken every hour to
provide you with a backup of your work. See Nasuni Filer Users Guide for more information on
          Nasuni Filer management tasks.
