                       COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY



The Department of Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, and Counseling Psychology invites
applications for an academic year (9-month), tenure track, benefits-eligible faculty position at the
rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (depending on qualifications) to begin on August 16,
2009. The appointee will serve as a core faculty member in both the CACREP – accredited
counseling program and the APA-accredited Ph.D. program in Counseling Psychology. Salary
is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The programs are located within the College of Human Resources and Education. They are
part of a comprehensive department that includes the doctoral program in counseling
psychology, master of arts degree in counseling and master of science in rehabilitation
counseling. The MA in counseling offers a focus tracks in school counseling and community
mental health counseling.

The Counseling Psychology Program is based on a practitioner/scholar model of training
directed at achieving a balance between practice and science. Students participate in
counseling practica to develop and refine counseling skills and learn about the methods for
conducting and evaluating research. They work closely with faculty and other psychologists in
supervised therapy practice and in conducting research.

The programs have access to many resources for counseling psychologists, including an APA –
accredited training site, health facilities for those interested in health psychology, and sports
programs for those with an interest in sports psychology/performance management.

Qualifications: A qualified applicant must have:

1   Completed doctorate from an APA accredited doctoral program in Counseling Psychology or
    related degree.
2   Licensable within two years as a psychologist and counselor in the state of West Virginia and
3   Candidates who have not completed their clinical experience requirement for licensure/
    certification are welcome to apply.
4   Research and scholarly activities commensurate with assistant or associate professor rank.
Preferences: The preferred candidates will have:
1   Teaching experience in a doctoral level counseling psychology program as well as a
    masters level counseling program.
2   Active memberships in the American Psychological Association and the American
    Counseling Association.
3   Dissertation or research supervision at the doctoral level.
4   Candidates applying for an appointment as an Associate Professor should have a suitable
    range of publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations in counseling psychology
    and counseling.
5   For the Counseling Psychology program, interest, experience and background in
    assessment, multicultural issues and diversity.
6   For the Counseling program, interest and experience in testing and assessment and other
    general counseling coursework, as well as using distance education technology.

Responsibilities include the following:

Provide instruction in the counseling psychology and counseling program as well as the
rehabilitation counseling program, as qualified.
Chair dissertations and serve on dissertation committees.
Provide academic advising to doctoral and master’s students.
Facilitate graduate student research, publication and professional activities.
Undertake a significant research and publication agenda.
Undertake service responsibilities to the Department, College, University, and professional field.
