					Tenemos una decision:

Tenemos una decisión: Cristo es
un mentiroso, un loco en el nivel
de un huevo escalfado, o el
Señor de todos. No hay opción
para que Él sea justo "un gran
 profesor moral."
Desertores y rebeldes?

Desertores y rebeldes... que
 representan a los incrédulos
que han dado vuelta a su parte
 posterior al Comandante y Sus
 estrategias.
La nutrición que recibimos
después de una comida?

La nutrición que recibimos
 después de una comida...
 representa cosas que podamos
 utilizar sin entendimiento
 completo. En la misma manera,
 no tenemos que entender todo
 sobre los misterios de Dios.
Un hombre en orilla puede
ayudar a una persona que
se ahoga?
Un hombre en orilla puede ayudar
a una persona que se ahoga...
 que representa cómo a Cristo
 puede ayudarnos porque Él está
 en la tierra sólida.
Una prueba para el
orgullo:

Lo más que tengamos orgullo en
 si mismos, lo más tenemos
 aversión en orgullo en otros.
La prueba ácida para un
corazón limpio:
¿Cuando Ud. oye algo malo sobre
 alguien, esta esperando
 secretamente que las noticias
 son peores, o mejores?
Si Ud está deseando cosas
 perores, Ud. necesita pedir que
 Dios cure su corazón.
Una definición de la fe:

El arte de sostener las cosas que
su razón ha aceptado, a pesar
 de sus humores que cambian.
Un mapa del Océano
Atlántico?
Un mapa del Océano Atlántico no es
 tan verdadero como el Océano
Atlántico en sí mismo... más que
teología es tan verdadero como Dios
mismo. Los mapas y la teología son
solamente una colección de datos y
 experimentos, pero son necesarios
para conseguir lo que Dios quiera.
La relación entre un
cuadrado y un cubo?
La relación entre un cuadrado y un
 cubo, entre dos dimensiones y
 objetos tri-dimensionales.... nos
 recuerda cómo Dios, en dimensiones
 infinitas, pueden caber juntas:

--Sus cualidades (e.g., puede caber junto
su soberanía y nuestra opción en la
    misma situación)
--Sus tres Personas en un solo Dios.
Espejos sucios?

muchas ramas?

Como un árbol con muchas ramas
 es regado por una fuente
 común... así la humanidad es
 conectada, alimentada y regada
todo por la respiración y la
 gracia común de Dios.
Una gota del colorante?

Mientras que una gota del
colorante da nuevo color a un
 vaso entero del agua... así
Cristo da nuevo color al hombre
 y a la humanidad.
Juguemos fingiendo?

Como los niños jueguen fingiendo,
vistiendo como reyes y reinas... así
 el cristianismo está todo sobre
 "vestir como Cristo," hasta que
 tengamos caras como la Suya,
 intentando coger “la buena
 infección,” intentando pintar su
retrato para el mundo con nuestras
 vidas.
Las ratas en el sótano?

Mientras que las ratas en el sótano
 funcionan cuando la luz se
 enciende...así que la luz expone
nuestros pecados. La luz no creó las
 ratas, él las expuso solamente.
 Nuestras dificultades inesperadas
 que demuestran nuestros pecados
no los crean; las exponen solamente,
 y eso somos los pecadores.
Como un hombre honesto
que paga impuestos?
Como un hombre honesto que
 paga impuestos, esperando a
 tener suficiente dinero
 después...así es el cristiano que
 intenta mantener algunas cosas
 como suyas.
Cortar la hierba puede
hacerse corto?
Cortar la hierba puede hacerse
 corto, pero no lo cambiará.
 Debe ser desarraigado y trigo
 ser plantado para un cambio
 verdadero. Semejantemente, no
 podemos cambiar nuestros
 pecados a si mismos.
 Necesitamos la ayuda de Dios
 para arrancarlos.
La diferencia entre
pintura y tintas?
La diferencia entre pintura y
 tintas... representando la
 necesidad de ser empapado con
Dios en vez de ser justo
 superficie pintó.
Es duro que un huevo dé
vuelta en un pájaro?
Es duro que un huevo dé vuelta
en un pájaro; es mucho más
 duro que un huevo aprenda
 volar... Semejantemente, si
 vamos a volar, nosotros
 debemos ser cambiados. Y si
 permanecemos en la cáscara,
 seremos eventualmente el
 malo.
Como una casa se debe
rasgar abajo para construir
un castillo en su lugar?
Como una casa se debe rasgar
 abajo para construir un castillo
en su lugar. Imagínese a si
mismo como una casa viva. Dios
entra y rasga todo en él,
haciendo un lío terrible, pues Él
 construye un castillo. Él dice,
 "sea perfecto."

  nuestras personalidades
individuales para ser todo el se
  hace para ser todo.
Dispuesto y alegre:

Pensemos que no importa cómo o
 porqué nosotros hacemos algo.
Pero la verdad es que las
 acciones correctas hechas por
la razón incorrecta no ayudan a
 construir la calidad o el
 carácter interno llamado una
VIRTUD, y es esta calidad o
 carácter que realmente importa.
La cortesía y la alegría
(C&A):
 requeridas.
  Abundancia:

Si nuestro gasto en las comodidades,
lujos, diversiones, etc., está hasta el
estandarte que es común entre ésos
con el mismo dinero que nosotros,
 estamos dando probablemente
 demasiado poco.
El obstáculo más grande
a la generosidad:

El obstáculo más grande a la
   generosidad es inseguridad y
   miedo, no avaricia.
  Nadie sabe, “Cuanto es
   suficiente para vivir en el
   futuro?”

Solamente Cristianismo

       por C.S. Lewis

Un tributo a una mente despertada,
The question C.S. Lewis
and his Mind Awake would
have us ask in life is this:

“So, how can an
 X____________________
 teach us about the Christian
 life?”

Indicated page numbers refer to ISBN 0-06-065292-6
Aquí está la pregunta por
C.S. Lewis:

   ¿Cómo se puede aprender sobre
    la vida espiritual por esta
    observación de la vida natural?
The word “Gentleman?”

“Gentleman” used to mean
something special, now it is just
a word for a person with XY
 chromosomes. We have to be
 careful “Christian” doesn’t
 similarly degenerate to meaning
 nothing.
La palabra “Caballero?”

En el pasado, la palabra “caballero”
significo algo especial. Hoy en día, la
palabra es solamente una palabra por
 un hombre. Tenemos que estar
seguros que la palabra “cristiano” no
 degenera semejantemente al
 significar casi nada.
 Halls and Rooms?

Halls and Rooms…representing
 Christianity and its denominations.
One is a place in which to wait for
a time only; one is place in which
 to find comfort and develop
 relationships.
The Underground?

Christians, like soldiers and
 citizens working in the
 underground of WWII to save
 their nations from Nazi evils,
are living and battling in enemy-
 occupied territory….in territory
 occupied by God’s enemy Satan.
Un ejercito clandestino?

Como un ejército clandestino,
 vivimos y luchamos como
 Cristianos en el territorio
 ocupado por el enemigo de
 nuestro Dios, el territorio de
 Satanás.
Pasillos y cuartos?

 solamente por un rato;
Hay que entrar a los cuartos para
 encontrar comodidad y para
 desarrollar relaciones.

  Mere-ness of Christianity
2. “Gentleman” used to mean gentle
  man
3. Halls aren’t places of fellowship and
  growth
Foreword:
How monotonously alike are all the tyrants;
How gloriously different are all the saints

God is well aware of what a wretched
machine you are trying to drive:
 1. Drive it the best you can.
 2. Get up every morning with the pressures
of life crowding you & decide what kind of
 mortal you would be.

The great religious struggle isn’t fought on a
  spectacular battleground, but within the
  ordinary human heart.
     Right and Wrong
 as Clues to the Meaning
     of the Universe

Apologetics: Does God exist?
            Is Jesus the Christ?
            Does it matter?
The Law
of Human Nature
The Law of “I know I should:”

Two Closing Points of the
 chapter:
 1. I should behave that way
 2. I don’t; thus I deserve
 condemnation.
Some Objections
Isn’t The Law of Human Nature just
   herd instinct to survive?

No. Hear a cry for help in danger:
1. I’ll help (herd instinct)
2. I’ll not (self instinct)
3. I ought to help (law)

(Law tells us the keys we should play:
   instincts are just the keys.)
The Reality of the Law

The law isn’t something we made
 up; it’s really there:

Unlike the law of gravity, it can
 be disobeyed, but with
 consequences….now and also
 for eternity.
What Lies Behind the
Law
There is Someone directing this
 law:

Like an architect who has built
  the house,
Giving us insider information;
sending “letters” to all of our
  consciences.
We Have Cause to Be
Uneasy
1. This Power is not soft, it is just. The
demands of its law must be met, and
  we can’t meet them.

2. Thus the search for truth begins in
  terror (we deserve condemnation); it
only ends in comfort for the Christian
(resting on the payment by Christ).
II. What Christians
Believe
1. God is the Architect and Owner
  of the house.
2. Man is the tenant who has torn
  up the house.
3. Christ is the Savior, sent to
      restore the relationship
  between Architect and tenant.
Rival Conceptions of
God
• Is there a God? Yes or no.
  If No: Atheists are in the minority;
Their position is hard to justify.
• If Yes: Is God the Maker of the
  house or the House?
  • Maker: Jews, Moslems, Christians
  • House: (pantheism) Hindus
The Invasion

The enemy has invaded good’s
 territory;
We are now in enemy-occupied
territory and to carry on against
 the civil war through sabotage.
The Shocking
Alternative
God decided that it was worth it to allow
the civil war…to allow us to decide to
 love Him (His permissive will).
His Sovereign (Commanded) Will is that we live.
His Permissive (Decreed) Will is that we love.

Jesus claimed to be God & either He is,
or He was as crazy as a poached egg,
or as devilish as a demon.
  The Perfect Penitent

As sinners, we need the perfection of the
God-man to reconnect us with God.
But we don’t need to understand it all fully.

As we don’t have to understand vitamins to
be helped by eating healthy foods, so
We don’t have to fully understand how the
 crucifixion/resurrection saves us in order
 to be saved.
The Practical
Conclusion
We are soldiers in enemy-
 occupied territory with orders
to let His light shine through us
 while there is still light….
Before He comes back to end the
 war once and for all.
III. Christian Behavior

How Christians are to act
Three Parts of Morality

1. Fair play
  1. (Do ships collide into each other?)
2. Internal harmony
  1. (Are the ships sea worthiness?)
3. Ultimate purpose
  1. (Where are the ships headed?)
     The Cardinal Virtues
     (from “door hinge;” thus, pivotal)

1. Discernment/Wisdom (Prudence)
2. Moderation (Temperance)
3. Fairness (Justice)
4. Guts (Fortitude)

Theological, or Christian, virtues:
 1. Hope
 2. Faith
 3. Love
 Social Morality

Obey the Golden Rule.
Don’t pick and choose what to obey
  from the Bible.
Live traditional values but
  economically socialistic (e.g., lend
 freely to your neighbors).
(Should we ever charge interest?)
Give more than you can afford.
Christian Marriage
Forgiveness
  The Great Sin: Pride
Pride is spiritual cancer.
It’s essentially competitive; to have more
than you: thus, it causes enmity.
It’s the completely anti-God state of mind.
Test: Does someone else’s pride bother you?
  Do you mind being snubbed?
Religious goal is to be good; Christian goal
is to admit badness/to forget about me.
It’s OK to want to hear, “Well done;” not ok
to think, “What a good person I am.”
Humble person: thinks of you & enjoys life.
Charity
It’s more than just giving to the poor; it’s
love in the Christian sense: a state of
  the will.
Liking makes it easier to be charitable,
but liking is not a requirement.
ACT AS IF YOU LOVE and you will begin
to dislike less and even love (actions
  come before feelings).
Good and evil both increase at
  compound interest rates: small acts
today lead to big gains later….they are
  beachheads to victory or defeat.
Hope

When our focus is on the great
hope of eternity, we will do
great works on earth here and
 now (e.g., working for freedoms,
  hospitals, schools).
Longings for earthly things
(e.g., love, travel, career, hobbies) can’t
  give long term joy.
   Basic Faith (is:)

1. Believing the doctrines: that grace is both
necessary and sufficient because of our
pride and our sins (we’ve failed when trying
  to walk into the wind).
2. The art of holding on to reason in spite of
  changing emotions and moods.
3. A virtue because
  a. it must be maintained despite changing
  feelings.
  b. it only remains strong when it is fed.
Higher Faith (is:)
(It’s OK to skip stuff if you’re not asking the question right now:)
1. We’re bankrupt; as spokes of a wheel,
dependent on the hub to keep us
aligned with Him and one another.
2. Leave it to God (Hullo, throwing up sponges ):
trusting Him to keep us listening and
obeying, to make us sons of God. Not
   “being good enough.”
3. Faith joins with works as the two
blades of a pair of scissors.
IV. Beyond Personality;
1st Steps in Trinity
Despite what the cynics say, theology
isn’t too tough to be of value to us:
1. Theology is like a map: You need
maps to get safely to exciting
   places.
2. New theologies aren’t: The earth
   wasn’t flat, isn’t flat and isn’t going
   to become flat.
3. It isn’t just good advice: How to be
good. It’s about how to become
   sons of God.
Making and Begetting

1. Men make wireless sets, waffles
   and statues; men beget babies.
2. God makes all man through
   physical birth; God begets men
   through spiritual birth.
3. Men are statues; there’s a rumor
going around that some of them are
   coming to life.
Three Personal God

1. God is SUPRA-three-dimensional.
   So He can combine three
   personalities in one being.
e.g., In prayer: The Father is the
focus, the Son the example and
   route, the Spirit the stimulus.
2. Like sunlight is reflected best by a
clean mirror, God is seen best in
those who are clean and near.
 Time and Beyond Time
God is beyond the 4th dimension of time.
He is outside of moving from past to
 future, so…
He can handle all our requests at once.
He has more than “all the time in the
 world.”
Like an author can pause between writing
the lines of his book, so God isn’t limited
 by this universe’s storyline.
The Good Infection

Becoming like Christ, and
 spreading that Christ-likeness
 like one would spread an
 infection, is the whole of
 Christianity.
Obstinate Toy Soldiers

There’s a rumor going around that
some of the toy soldiers, some
 of the created men, are
 becoming real, are being born
 again:

       It’s true.
Two Notes

1.Why didn’t God beget a whole
  bunch of sons? Don’t ask.

2. Although the Christian
  community is interconnected
like organs in a body, each
  individual is uniquely important.
Let’s Pretend

Beauty and the Beast-like; Till we
 Have Faces-like:
Pretend to be Christ until you are
 like Christ.
Christianity Hard or
Easy?
Only as we step back from our
 natural, and letting the spiritual
 work in us.

How can we “Be perfect?” Only
as we are saturated as a stain,
not covering over as a paint.
Counting the Cost
God is easy to please but hard to
 satisfy:
He is pleased with our first
 stumbling steps; but not satisfied
 until we are dancers.
As a dentist, He will take care of all
the teeth; not just the one that is
 aching.
The only help He will give us is to
 become perfect.
Nice People or New Men

Niceness isn’t our goal; newness
 is. With newness will come
 change which will lead toward
 nicerness.
ex, old factory w/ new owner
The New Men
The physical life & the
spiritual life?

Natural life reflects spiritual life (p62)…..Both
are derived from parents (i.e., from our
heavenly Father and our physical one), but
need to be taken care of. We can die of
suicide both physically and spiritually. We
must make efforts to maintain both lives.
La vida natural?

La vida natural...puede
 representar la vida espiritual.
Los dos se derivan de padres
(un Padre espiritual y un padre
 físico). Podemos morir de
suicidio y descuidado en las dos
 vidas. Debemos trabajar para
 mantener las dos.
The roof of a greenhouse?
The roof of a greenhouse only reflects
the light. It doesn’t attract it. The
   roof becomes bright because the
light shines on it…Like that roof, we
are bright only as the Son reflects on
us and through us. We can’t attract
Him. We love because he FIRST
   loved us.
La azotea
de un invernadero?
 La azotea de un invernadero...
  que representa a nosotros. Una
azotea refleja la luz; no la atrae.
Llega a ser brillante porque la
  luz brilla en ella. Somos
  brillantes solamente porque el
Hijo de Dios refleja en nosotros
  y a través de nosotros.
Cutting off your fingers?

Cutting off fingers… representing a Christian
not joining the church. Cutting off a guy’s
fingers won’t help him get the job
done. We are the fingers. We have to help,
not criticize the church and its work.
El corte de los dedos?

El corte de los dedos...que
 representan cristianos que no
 congregan en una iglesia. Un
hombre que corte los dedos no
 puede ayudar a su cuerpo.
 Tenemos que ayudar, no criticar
 a la iglesia y a su trabajo.
A Frenchman who waited to
help Allies until after Nazis’
fall?
A Frenchman who waited to help the Allies
until after the Nazis’ fall…can be used to
represent a man who says he’ll wait till
death to think about God. You can’t choose
to fall down and worship only after you find
it is impossible to do anything else. We
have to help out by our actions now; He
receives glory from our voluntary surrender
  and salute.
Un hombre que espera
para ayudarle?

Un hombre que espera para ayudarle
después de la terminación de todo
 el trabajo...que representa a un
 hombre que lo diga “esperará
 hasta muerte para pensar en
 Dios.” Tenemos que ayudarlo y
 glorificarlo a Dios con nuestras
 vidas y acciones ahora.
A guy snooping around;
a spy?
A snooper, a spy looking around
 to stop anyone from having
 fun… representing God…This is
a childish and wrong concept of
 God.
Un espía?

Un espía, mirando para parar
 cualquier persona para tener
 diversión... representando a
 Dios. Esto es un concepto
infantil e incorrecto de Dios. Él
es lo más glorificado cuando Su
gente esta disfrutándolo a Él y
 Su mundo.
Lubricants for a machine?
 A machine lubricant… representing
the Moral Rules of the universe.
   Lubricants keep the machine from
   breaking down. They prevent strain,
   friction, and wear.
The Moral Rules of the universe do
the same for the human heart.
Los lubricantes de una
maquina?
Los lubricantes de una
 maquina... que representan las
 reglas morales del universo.
Las reglas, como lubricantes,
 guardan los corazones de la
 tensión, la fricción, y el
 desgaste.
A tennis player with
perfect strokes?

The tennis player hitting each
serve perfectly, or a car driver
 shifting each gear perfectly
 representing our ideals and
 striving for perfection…They are
 goals at which to aim.
El jugador del futbol?

El jugador del futbol que patea
 cada pelota perfectamente, el
 conductor del carro que cambia
 de puesto cada engranaje... que
 representa nuestros ideales y
      jugador confiable.)
Three ships sailing in
formation
Three ships sailing in formation
  representing the three parts of
  morality…
• 1. individual seaworthiness,
• 2. corporate seaworthiness of fair
  play & harmony between folks
    (also likened to humanity playing
    together in a band); and
• 3. the destination of the fleet.
Tres naves que navegan
en la formación?
Tres naves que navegan en la
  formación... que representa las
  tres partes de la moralidad:
• 1. navegaciones individuales
• 2. navegaciones de armonía
  entre la gente
• 3. la destinación de la flota.
Definitions of virtues:

• Prudence= common sense=be wise
  as servants
  • “Be good, sweet maid and let who can
    be clever” representing undesired
    slothfulness in the Christian life
• Temperance=moderation
• Justice=keeping promises
Definiciones de virtudes:

• 1. Prudencia = sabiduria comun
• 2. Temperancia = moderacion
• 3. Justicia = manteniendo las
  promesas
A bad tennis player making
an occasional good shot?
A Bad tennis player making good shot once
in a while contrasted with a person who
perseveres in doing just actions. Such a
person develops a certain quality of
  character.
(If a bad tennis player hits very hard, not because
he sees that a very hard stroke is required, but
because he has lost his temper, his stroke might
possibly, by luck, help him to win that particular
game; but it will not be helping him to become
     a reliable player.)
Bringing a horse back to
a fence?
Bringing a horse back to a fence it has
 refused to jump…representing
bringing a child back to practice his
lessons. We need to be brought
back and to be reminded even more
than we need to be instructed.
A cook book ?

A cook book, as contrasted with
 a source of energy for
 cooking….Christianity tells you
to feed the hungry, not what to
 cook. It’s a director and a
 source of energy for cooking,
 rather than the directions
 themselves.
Psychiatry?
Psychiatry as a technique for putting the
  human mind right… contrasted with
Christianity as the technique for putting
  the human right.
For example: Two men go to war, get scared
in battle, come home and are eventually
cured in mind....The one whose heart is
healed can now be cool under fire; the one
whose heart remains sick can now run
  away.
Morality is concerned with making the right
  choices; psychiatry is concerned with
  healing the mind.
El sicoanálisis?
El sicoanálisis es una técnica para
  arreglar la mente humana...en
  contraste con cristianismo como la
  técnica para arreglar el corazón
  humano.
  • Por ejemplo: Dos hombres van a la
guerra, y están asustados. Regresan al
hospital y están curados en la mente.
más tarde, el uno con un corazón
    arreglado ahora puede regresar a
batallar; el otro con un corazón sucio
puede huir para salvar a si mismo.
Raw material?

Raw material as contrasted with the finished
  product…representing the contrast between
our emotional baggage and the holiness in our
lives. Some of us have been given much
(without much baggage) and have really
accomplished nothing, some of us have been
given nothing (except much baggage) and have
really accomplished much. Only God really can
thus really know how well we are doing and
  have done.
La materia prima?
La materia prima en contraste con el
  producto acabado... que representa el
  contraste entre nuestro bagaje emocional
y nuestra santidad.
Pues, solamente Dios
  realmente puede sabernos y juzgarnos.
A paintball mark?

A paintball mark… representing the mark left
on our soul as a result of every decision we
make. Each little decision twists or
changes us a little bit, into something that
will eventually be very, very good or very,
  very bad.
Una herida en la piel
después de un accidente?
Una herida en la piel después de
 un accidente... que representa
la marca en nuestra alma con
 cada decisión que hacemos
para el bien o para el mal. Cada
 pequeña decisión nos cambia
un poquito, entre algo que será
 eventualmente muy, muy bueno
 o muy, muy mal.
Sleep and drunkenness?
Sleep and drunkenness… representing
  badness. You can’t know you’re
  asleep or drunk until you’re awake;
you can’t know how bad you are till
  you’re good.
Un sueño?

Un sueño... que representa maldad.
Usted no puede saber que usted
 esta durmiendo y soñando hasta
que Ud. ha despertado. En la
 misma manera, Ud. no puede
saber el mal hasta que Ud. sabe
 el bien.
A mutton chop unveiled?
Response to a strip tease act with a mutton
  chop under a serving dish’s lid…
representing society’s response to sex. A
”Wow!” response implies there has either
been too much or too little food being
  consumed in the community.

All your worst pleasures are purely spiritual: the
pleasure of putting other people in the wrong, of
bossing and patronizing and spoiling sport, and
back-biting, the pleasures of power, of hatred.
• For there are two things inside me, competing with
the human self which I must try to become. They
are the Animal and Diabolical Selves.
• The D.S. is the worse of the two. That is why A
COLD, SELF RIGHTEOUS PRIG who goes regularly
to church may be far nearer to hell than a
   prostitute.
The Acid Test for a cleansed
heart (p118):

dusty mirror, so God can't show himself to
us and through us with dirtied minds and
   characters.
It's not that He has favorites, showing self
more to and through some than others. It’s
just that dirt blocks the ability to reflect

life, we need to get close to God
  (p 176).
Dirty kids who hate baths?

  advantage of others.
A toy soldier?

 (p 181)
Kids playing
  “Let’s Play Pretend?”

good infection, trying to paint his portrait
for the world with our lives (p187).
A woman saying, “I don't

As it is OK for a baby to at first
 nurse without knowing her
Mother (but later this would not be
OK)…so it is OK for men to at
 first receive help from God
 without knowing God, but later
 it is not OK (p190).
Building with sand?

Like building with sand…so we
must not build on man. One can
do great things with sand, but
not build a house with it. We
can do great things with man,
but we can't rely on man; must
build on and rely upon God
  (p191).
Rats in the cellar running
when the light is turned
on?
As rats in the cellar run when the light is
turned on…so light exposes our sins and

Our unexpected difficulties that show our
sins don't create them; they only expose
them, and that we are sinners (p192).
A game of make-believe,
of dress up?

Divine make-believe (dressing up as God's Son,
in putting on Christ), like a mother talking to
baby before he can talk, like a man
treating his dog as if human....each of
which raise the lower toward the
  higher.
So God allowing us to dress up as or “put
on Christ” is a divine make-believe that
raises up us toward Him (p194).
An honest man paying
taxes?

Like an honest man paying taxes, or a man
cutting off a single branch of a dying tree
only, or of a dentist drilling a tooth instead
of extracting it….hoping that it’ll be ok only
doing a partial job, so it is with a carnal
Christian trying to hang onto some things.
It just makes his life more difficult in the
  long run (p 196).
The laziest boy in the
class?
The laziest boy in the class works the
hardest in the end. The mountain

on to the easiest ways in life early
on, or we’ll end up being in trouble
 later (p 197).
Cutting the grass?
Cutting the grass may keep it short,
but it won't change it. It must be
uprooted and wheat planted for a
real change… Similarly, just trying to

 can’t cause change. Our personal,
sinful selves must be uprooted and
replaced with the Spirit of Christ (p
 198).
Coming in out of the
wind?
There is a difference between coming
in out of the wind and staying out

 be changed, to be soaked
 through and through (p 198).
An egg hatching into a
bird?
It's hard for an egg to turn into a
bird; it’s much harder for an egg
  to learn to fly… Similarly,
  although hatching may seem
difficult, if we’re going to fly, we
must be changed. If we just
stay in the shell, we will
  eventually go bad (p 198).
The government promoting
and protecting happiness
of its people?

As the government promotes and
 protects the happiness of the

making a terrible mess, as he
builds a castle. He says, “Be
  ye perfect (p205).”

The output of a factory?

The output of a factory is a function of the

  the leadership… Similarly, a person’s output for
society is a function of his original package of
gifts and deficiencies, his work and the
leadership (or lack of thereof) of Christ in his life.
So we can’t judge a man by his output; we don’t
know with what he started. Christ doesn’t
promise that all Christians will have greater
outputs than all non Christians; just that each
person’s output will be increased with Christ
as director of the factory (p208).
Compass needle
pointing north?

As a compass needle points
north…so God will help us, but
not force it to point north. We
have the ability to choose (p
 212; Josh 24:25).
Gifts from our parents?

As gifts from our parents…so any
niceness we have is a gift

 dying of old age (p221).
An obstetrician coming
to deliver the baby?

As when an obstetrician comes
to deliver the baby…so Christ is
ready to deliver us. Are we
willing to be delivered as new
 men (p222)?
The fun of joining a
secret society?

As joining a secret society of
 goodness is fun… so is
 becoming holy, joining a secret
 society of FUN adventures in
 joyful goodness (p223).
Putting salt on food?

As salt on food, as light on people
who have lived in the dark…so
Christ in us doesn’t make us all
the same, but brings out our
 individual personalities to be all
they are made to be (p224).
Willingly and Cheerfully:
You might think that, provided you did the
right thing, it did not matter how or why
you did it—whether you did it willingly or
  unwillingly, sulkily or cheerfully, through
fear of public opinion or for its own sake.
But the truth is that right actions done for
the wrong reason do not help to build the
internal quality or character called a
VIRTUE, and it is this quality or character
  that really matters.
− (For example, if a bad tennis player hits very hard,
not because he sees that a very hard stroke is
required, but because he has lost his temper, his
stroke might possibly, by luck, help him to win that
particular game; but it will not be helping him to
          become a reliable player (p 80).
Courtesy and Cheerfulness

   C&C are required Christian
    virtues (p84).
Wealth:

If our expenditure on comforts,
luxuries, amusements, etc, is up to
   the standard which is common
among those with the same income
as our own, we are probably giving
   away too little (p86).
− The greatest obstacle to charity is most often
not luxury, but insecurity and fear…
− Not knowing, “How much is enough? Will I run
out of money after I give it all away?”
