21st January 2011

Dear Parents,

As you know, on Monday, 7th February we will once again be supporting Unicef’s ‘Day For
Change’ by learning about children’s rights to good health, education and play and what it is
like to live in the country of Guyana in South America. Please send your child to school
dressed in one of the colours of the Guyana national flag – red, black, yellow, white or green,
and make a small contribution of 50p for this, which will go to support Unicef’s work with
children in Guyana and other developing countries. Thank you for your support for this
worthwhile cause. Don’t forget you are welcome to join us for our launch assembly at 9.15am
and then join your child in the classroom to take part in a classroom investigation about life in
Guyana. We look forward to seeing you!
Further to my recent letter, don’t forget the date for your child’s Golden Postbox Assembly
is as follows. Squirrel parents, please also note that, due to our decision to support the
Unicef ‘Day For change’ again this year on Monday, 7th February, we have decided to
celebrate the Squirrel Class Golden Postbox Assembly with Rabbit Class on 14th February,
instead of on 7th February as we originally planned.

Otter Class 10th January Deer Class 31st January
Fox Class 17th January Squirrel Class and Rabbit Class
Badger & Hedgehog Classes 24th January 14th February

Assembly is held in the main school hall at 9.15am and parents, carers, grandparents and
younger siblings are all welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you.
This very successful parent workshop took place after school on Monday, 17th January. A
super 23% of all our parents came to join in (27% excluding Nursery parents). The purpose of
the Workshop was to show parents how we encourage good cursive handwriting in later life by
laying down the foundations of fluent 'joined-up' writing right from when children begin to
form their letters on paper. This was an interactive workshop, with parents joining in and
writing alongside their child and discovering how best they can now help and support their
child's writing at home. The comments afterwards were overwhelmingly positive as you will
see from the Evaluation of the event which is on our website at www.kingsfurlong-, along with some super photos! We always listen to parents' comments and
suggestions and are delighted to see that 100% of parents responded that they will now
practise handwriting with their child regularly.
As you will have seen in the recent letter sent home, we are recording a cd of the children
singing for Sing Up Day on Wednesday 9th February, along with Kings Furlong Junior School.
You will also have received a colouring competition sheet on which your child can design the
cd cover so don’t forget to encourage your child to do this over the weekend and return their
picture to school on Monday 24th January. Details will follow soon about an opportunity to
come in to school and listen to the children sing on the afternoon of 9th February.
This year’s parents’ evenings will be held on Monday, 14th February and Tuesday 15th February,
between 4.00 and 7.00pm. Nursery has Parents’ Evenings on the same days, and in addition on
16th February between 4.00pm and 5.00pm and 17 th February between 3.00pm and 4.30pm.
Boards will soon be put up in the main entrance area of school, outside the Otter classroom
and in Nursery for you to book an appointment to meet your child’s teacher and discuss his or
her progress. A letter with full details of parents’ evening arrangements follows soon but you
might like to make a note of the dates in advance.

This week, our suggestion for a healthy lunchbox comes from Om in Fox class. Om brought in
this super lunch earlier this week: a wholemeal wrap with an omelette filling, flavoured with
onion and curry leaf, a banana, a strawberry yoghurt and some orange juice to drink. What a
super, healthy lunch Om – lots of ideas there for our next Healthy Lunchbox Monday.
We held a retiring collection at the end of our Christmas production of The Donkey Seller
and added all the donations to the staff collection we had made. Altogether we raised the
wonderful sum of £798.28 to donate to the valuable work they do at St Michael's Hospice.
On Monday 10th January, we were joined in our morning assembly by Helena Maskell who
works for St Michael's Hospice, and we presented her with our cheque. She thanked all our
children, parents, carers and staff for their kind donations and told us how valuable our
contribution will be towards all the expensive projects and daily care they offer to patients
at the Hospice. Thank you all for your support for this wonderful cause. We thought you
would like to see a picture of Helen accepting the cheque from children in our assembly, on
behalf of St Michael's Hospice.
The Big Schools’ Birdwatch runs from 24th January to 4th February, 2011 and is a great way
for children to find out more about the wildlife visiting our school grounds! Children will be
taking part in various activities in school and if you would like to take part at home, please
follow the Birdwatch website at
