The Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island, a project of the Mental Health Association of Nassau
County, is comprised of mental health and substance abuse providers, representatives from county,
state and federal government, the VA, VET Centers, veterans organizations, elected officials and
other stakeholders. The mission of the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island is to: Promote the
health and well-being of Long Island veterans and their families through advocacy, and a broad array
of services.

STATISTICS: Out of the 1,000,000 veterans who live in New York State, 174,000 of them live on Long
Island. In fact Long Island is second only to San Diego in the percentage of veterans among its citizens.

ORGANIZATION: The Alliance meets bi-monthly and also has 3 Workgroups:

PROGRAM AND TRAINING: The Program and Training Workgroup is chaired by Gaylene Pandolfo
of the New York State Office of Mental Health Long Island Field Office. The workgroup helps to educate
mental health providers about the military culture, and about new approaches to recovery from combat
related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It has also worked with National Guard Family Readiness Groups
regarding deployment and post-deployment issues. The alliance has also offered workshops for law
enforcement officials and other social service workers. To date the Alliance has trained 662 individuals.

OUTREACH: Since 11/07 the Veterans Health Alliance has encountered and provided informational
literature to 923 veterans, family members and other stakeholders. These events include: “Stand Downs”,
Veterans Benefits and Job Fairs, Naval Reserve and Marine Reserve Family Events, and a weekend
display of a replica of the Vietnam Wall.

In collaboration with NYS Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and the Nassau County Veterans Service
Agency, an informational brochure regarding PTSD and available resources was mailed to over 3,100
Nassau County Veterans who have returned home since 9/11/01.

During the 2008 holiday season, informational cards regarding PTSD were put in holiday stockings and
mailed out to soldiers from the 133 Quartermaster Company (Brooklyn) and the 2/25 Marines. (Garden
City)

ADVOCACY: VHALI has met with elected officials on a county, state and federal level to advocate for
veterans programming and funding.
