Celebrating in Victoria
Victoria’s restaurants and vibrant pub and club scene make it a great place for celebrations and events. Knowing some of the liquor laws that apply in Victoria can help you to enjoy these highlights safely. • In Victoria the legal drinking age and the legal age for entering a venue that sells alcohol, is 18. • Friends or other adults may not buy alcohol to give to people who are under the age of 18. • Most areas have local laws making it illegal to drink or have open containers of alcohol in public places such as streets or parks. If you are found with an open container of alcohol, police may ask you to empty the container. It is best to comply with a police request, as it may avoid the possibility of being fined. • If you are intoxicated, bar staff must refuse to serve you any alcohol. • If you are drunk, you will be asked to leave the premises. You must leave, if asked to do so.
Proof of Age
You may be asked to prove that you are over 18 to purchase alcohol. To prove you are 18 years or over, you can present your: • Passport (Australian or foreign), or • Proof of Age card issued in any Australian State or Territory, or • Australian driver’s licence or Victorian learner’s permit, or • Keypass card
