In April, Mary Ann Erickson was presented The Mega-Myocardium Award for “for truly caring for her students and
for going out of her way to help them be successful.” Each year students nominate ES faculty and staff for this award.
Congratulations to Mary Ann!

Megan Pales married Grant Kruft on May 30 in Rocky Point, Mexico. Congratulations Megan!

Congratulations to Mary Ann Erickson, Melissa Knight-Maloney and Tim Thomas. They participated in the FLC
Tri the Rim Triathlon in April. Mary Ann placed second in her age group, Melissa won her age group and Tim
received the Spirit Award.

Joanne Reddell (Exercise Science Office Manager) welcomed her fourth grandchild into the family on June 14.
Maddie Nicole Reddell was born at Mercy Medical Center in Durango CO and measured 17-1/2” and 6.9 lbs.
Congratulations Nanny!

Congratulations to Jim Cross for winning his 9th consecutive World Championship in the My Triathlon! On Sat,
August 1, Cross rowed 5000 meters on Lemon Lake in 27 minutes 24 seconds, won 12 games in the Tennis event and
then shot 83 at Hillcrest Golf Course. His total score for the event was 98 which was computed by adding the golf
score to the rowing time and then deducting the number of tennis games won. Cross has now surpassed Lance
Armstrong’s seven consecutive Tour de France victories and UCLA Basketball’s seven consecutive NCAA titles.

Melissa Knight-Maloney travelled to Australia earlier this month to compete with the United States Triathlon Team at
the International Triathlon Union World Championships. She placed 13th in her age group!! Way to go, Melissa!

In May, Jed Blanton (’07) graduated from Georgia Southern University with a master’s degree in Sport
Psychology. This fall he began a Ph.D. program in Psychosocial Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity at

Anthony Colby (’04) was the top finisher in the Pro/Senior Men’s I & II Iron Horse Bicycle Class Omnium
Championships over the Memorial Day weekend. The Omnium championship consisted of a road race,
criterium and individual time trial. Top 20 finishers also included the following ES alumni: Alex Hagman
(’06), Lee Rosenthal (’08) and Matt Shriver (’08).

2007 graduate Katie Composto began a new job in August 2009 with Kompetitive Edge, a company which
sells swimming supplies, sets up recreation centers and their pro-shops and does team sales. Check it out at

Nick Fabula (’08) has relocated to Seattle WA where he is applying to graduate schools for admission in a
physical therapy program. (fabulan@hotmail.com)

This summer Nicole Heffington (’07) completed a master’s degree in Kinesiology Athletic Training at San
Jose State University. In addition she did a graduate assistantship at Stanford University. She has relocated
to Madison WI for a residency as a physicians extender at the University of Wisconsin.

In addition to his full-time job with La Plata County Assessor's Office as an Oil and Gas Property Records
Technician, Ben Katko (’08) joined the Wellness Committee for his organization. In this role, he conducts
fitness assessments and creates fitness plans for employees. (grappling falcon@gmail.com)

2007 graduate Ben Martinez has assumed a new position in the Fort Lewis College Athletics Department,
Sports Information Director and Game Operations. Though he admits that it’s a lot of work, he is enjoying

Natasha Miera (’03) continues to enjoy her position as a Medical Assistant with Digestive Health
Associates in Durango. Her son, Jaden, turned two in June. (nmiera@hotmail.com)

Since 2007, Amy (Rovig) Plantz (’03) has been the Benefits Coordinator at Alpine Bank in Glenwood
Springs CO. She handles the benefits, insurance and wellness programs for the employees. In 2008, she
married Brad Plantz, a Wisconsin native, who owns a real estate business in the Glenwood Springs area.

Matt Shriver (’08) became the head cycling coach at Fort Lewis College in August.

2006 graduate James Wait has been a substitute teacher in early childhood education for the Denver Public
Schools. In addition he has been writing and interviewing pastors and musicians for an online Christian
magazine called theundergroundsite.com. In 2010, he plans to attend Luther Rice Seminary to pursue a
