Assess abuse and neglect of Florida's children and vulnerable adults. Serves as a central
receiving and referral point for all cases of suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of
children, disabled adults and seniors. Receives complaints alleging abuse, neglect or
exploitation on a 24-hour/7 days a week basis. Clients include seniors (age 60 and up)
and adults (18-59) with physical and mental incapacity who are unable to protect
themselves from abuse, neglect or exploitation. Reports are immediately sent to the
appropriated Children & Families office responsible for completing the investigative
process. Anyone wishing to make a report of abuse for either a child or adult can contact
the Florida Abuse Hotline at the toll-free number, 1-800-96-ABUSE. The person taking
the call at the abuse hotline will collect what information is available from the caller and
determine whether the allegations warrant further investigation. If further information is
deemed necessary, the matter is referred to a child protective investigator or adult
protective investigator in the appropriate district of the department where the alleged
victim is located. This office also issues statewide alerts and requests to locate victims
who have been abused or neglected.
