 of Age
            Coming of Age
Definition: Coming of Age is the attainment of
prominence, respectability, recognition, or
maturity .” Rites of passage often consist of
specific ceremonies.”


                 The thirteenth birthday marks passage into
                 the “teenage” years and the 21st into formal
                 adulthood.
         Coming of Age

Coming of Age is indicated when a
child becomes an adult and what is
now expected of them at the next
stage of their lives.
Historically, coming of age processes
change as general customs change…
        “Breeching” of Boys”
Boys moved from “skirts” to “breeches” or
          pants about age five.

Today, there are many times or
events in a person’s life that might
be considered a coming of age event
or a rite of passage…
A child’s
first haircut…




                  First lost tooth
   Participating in religious
          Ceremonies
such as Baptism or Confirmation
Attending the first day of
  Formal Schooling…

            The first day of
             school is often
              considered a
             coming of age
                 event.
There are many “coming of age”
 events beginning during the teen
             years…

   Proms and formal dances
Getting a Driver’s
     License„
   Working at a
first paying job„
                       Graduation…

  school and/or college
  graduation indicates our
  culture values education
  and that childhood is
  ending and adulthood is
  beginning.
Registering for selective
  service—Military…
Attaining the right to
         vote
 in public elections„
Weddings and Marriage…
There are three classic parts
to all rites of passage or
coming of age events :

  1. separation from normal life
  2. a threshold state of feeling
     “between”
  3. reincorporation into society with
     new status
Different cultures have varying rites
of passage or coming of age events.
  There are MANY rites of
   passage/coming of age
celebrated by young people
    in the United States.
