                AFRO-CARIBBEAN SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT

The Afro-Caribbean society aims to enhance awareness of both African and Caribbean
cultures by organizing events which showcase different elements of our heritage. The
ACS has grown from strength to strength each year and this year we planned to continue
in the same vein. We exceeded our membership target of 50 with 73 people joining the
society, a significant improvement from 60 last year. Most of our funding was provided
by our sponsors; Goldman Sachs, KPMG and Citigroup. Overall we raised over £10,000,
of which £5000 was carried over from last year. Next year, we aim to target a wider
range of companies as we expect less financial support from investment banks in light of
the recent economic downturn.

Our first event of the academic year was the “Meet and greet” on 15th October 2008
where freshers were introduced to the ACS and its members. The committee outlined
plans for the year and encouraged more people to get involved with the society. The day
ended with a bowling trip and dinner which gave new members the chance to socialize in
a relaxed atmosphere. On 27th October 2008 we celebrated Black History Month with
“chop chop”, a night introducing people to our traditional cuisines. There was a catered
buffet with food from different countries accompanied by music, performances and
presentations. This year we introduced a quiz on Black History with the winning team
receiving famous literature and DVD’s in line with our theme.

This year saw the 10th anniversary of our annual cultural and talent showcase; Afrogala.
With tickets selling out before the show, members performed to an audience of over 700
in the Great Hall. We showcased the many talents of our members and invited performers
to deliver a night of cultural splendour. Based on the feedback we received, the show was
a huge success and maintained the excellent standard set by last year’s committee. The
next main event will be the summer trip and picnic in June to give members a chance to
unwind after exams.

The majority of our money this year went towards organizing Afrogala and we hope to
raise more money next year to improve the show and support several charities. Overall, it
has been an extremely successful year and we aim to organise a formal handover in order
to pass on crucial information to the next committee which will further the growth of our
society.
