University Campus Suffolk
UCS is one of UK’s newest and most exciting higher education institutions launched in 2007
in collaboration with the University of East Anglia and the University of Essex – two of the
UK’s highest ranking universities. UCS provides students and staff with a friendly, can do,
innovative and ambitious context. Working with partners, it is focused on making a high
impact at local, regional, national and international level.
UCS is comprised of the main Ipswich campus, with UCS centres in Colleges in Bury St Edmunds,
Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Otley, and at Suffolk New College also in the Ipswich Educational
Quarter – which itself has just opened a £70m building and sports provision available to students and
staff at UCS. This innovative model ensures that UCS can offer its students a broad curriculum at a
choice of venues. Heads of School have subject authority across the Learning Network, but
managerial responsibility rests with each College.
Student numbers have progressively increased and currently stand at around 5,526 (4,853 fte), of
whom around 70% are based at the main Ipswich Campus, with the remainder in the Learning
Network. An increasing number are being recruited at postgraduate as well as undergraduate level.
Since our inception, over £75m has been invested in the creation of the Ipswich campus including the
opening of our iconic Waterfront Building on the Neptune marina, the extensive refurbishment of
legacy buildings, a new 600 bed student accommodation block and, from January 2011, the launch
of the James Hehir building, housing specialist teaching facilities and a superb student-led café/bar.
