Liberty Ship Memorial facing costly repairs
By Michael J. Tobin

The Liberty Ship Memorial, a 10-year-old
steel structure in Bug Light Park in South
Portland, is in need of repair.
Rust spots and bubbles have continued
to appear on its frame and patches of
mismatched paint cover up graffiti.
The harbor’s salty air and direct sun
has obscured texts on some of the five
informational murals. The memorial’s
concrete foundation is starting to crack.
“There are a number of locations on
the structure that are rusting out,” City
Manager James Gailey said at a Sept.
26 council workshop. “It needs to be
sandblasted and the entire thing should
be primed and painted. The salt air and
salt spray really takes a number on metal
structures like that down there, just a few
feet away from the water line.”
  Portland Harbor Museum sponsored the
memorial, which was built in November
2001 at Bug Light Park. The memorial

“The Good Table does more than just
