MANAGERIAL ENVIRONMENT: ETHICAL, PUBLIC POLICY AND GLOBAL ISSUES SPRING 2007 SEMESTER

Prerequisites: MBA 600, MBA 601; MBA 610 concurrent CATALOG DESCRIPTION This course focuses upon the social, legal and ethical factors in the external environment that impose boundaries upon managerial practices and strategies. Topics include frameworks for ethical analysis, legal and regulatory standards, and the historical context in which present social, legal and ethical norms have developed. Specific issues may involve: criminal liability for managerial misconduct; overseas bribery and other crosscultural and international problems; employment discrimination; sexual harassment; corporate governance, duties and obligations; product safety; and intellectual property. COURSE OBJECTIVES To acquire tools for analyzing ethical dilemmas and reaching moral conclusions To acquire an integrated and normatively substantive foundation in business ethics To develop the capacity to recognize the moral/ethical dimensions of managerial decision making To learn how to use moral reasoning for decisions that involve ethical dilemmas To become proficient in systematically articulating ethical arguments To develop ethical awareness of the effects of managerial decision making on oneself and others To identify, examine and clarify personal values as they relate to one’s work and career To understand the organizational context in which managers face ethical dilemmas To identify the organizational pressures which affect managers' awareness of moral/ethical issues To understand the structure of a corporation, including its stakeholders' interests and obligations To develop a cross-cultural perspective on ethical issues in management To exercise and develop oral and written communication skills To develop the capacity for systematic inquiry, critical thinking, independent judgment and intellectual self-sufficiency
