Business, The Natural Environment, and the Global Economy MGMT 5019 Credits: 2 credits None
This course addresses business strategies that affect the natural environment and the ways business strategies and practices can produce “win-win" outcomes that are both good for the environment and good for business. Objectives There is little disagreement that environmentalism affects corporate management, altering profit and loss statements and influencing both domestic and international strategy. Annual costs for pollution control in the US rose from $27 billion in 1972 to more than $90 billion in 1990, and are projected to reach $250 billion by the year 2005. The impact of such expenditures on economic competitiveness is clear. While many within industry and government vilify environmentalism as a threat to economic growth, others take advantage of the economic opportunities it can reveal. Some companies have found that environmental protection and the economic bottom line can go hand in hand. Under what conditions can “greening’s” impact on corporate strategy be positive? The goal of this course is to explore the question of when and how that happens. Learning Outcomes Understanding the drivers of environmental protection: The market Public policies Global treaties
