                      Mother’s Day
Did you know that the idea for Mother's Day was born in a small Methodist
                     church in Grafton, West Virginia?

It was 1876 and the nation still mourned the Civil War dead. While teaching a
Memorial Day lesson, Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis thought of mothers who had
lost their sons. She prayed that one day there could be a "Memorial Day" for
mothers. The prayer made a deep impression on one of Mrs. Jarvis' eleven
children. Young Anna had seen her mother's efforts to hold the war-split
community and church together. As she grew into adulthood, the younger
woman kept Mrs. Jarvis' dream in her heart. On the day of her mother's death,
Anna was determined to establish a Mother's Day in her honor.

On May 12, 1907, a local observance was held which later spread to
Philadelphia. By 1990, Mother's Day was celebrated in forty-five states,
Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. Elated, Miss Jarvis told a friend,
"Where it will end must be left for the future to tell. That it will circle the
                         globe now seems certain."

On May 8, 1914, President Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as
Mother's Day "for displaying the American flag and for the pubic expression
of love and reverence for the mothers of the country.”

      Volunteer Opportunities
            for Summer
I am looking for some new faces to join the Wednesday night
dinner volunteer teams for our summer dinners.
The work is a bit lighter but still a lot of fun!
Each team will serve 3 Wednesdays during the summer from
4-7 pm and get a free meal with the deal!

Also, I need two or three more people who would like to help
change out the church signs early in the week on Monday or
Tuesday. Usually someone takes the job for one month at a time
and works at their convenience on those days.

Please let me know if you are interested in either of these areas of
                      service for the church.

NOTES FROM OUR MINISTER OF MUSIC
What INCREDIBLE music presentations we had this past Sunday night as our Pre-School and Children’s
Choirs presented their annual spring and end of year concerts. To our Pre-School Director: Susan Daugard,
Sonshine Director: Dawn Bazzell, and God’s Kid’s Director: Kathy Curry, along with those helping them,
THANK YOU again for your magnificent and successful efforts in making 2010/2011 a great year of sharing
the music ministry with many children.

Even though our Children’s Director, Susan McLain does not personally direct any of the choirs, she has been
directly involved in working with our Children’s Choir Coordinator, Kathy Curry. Susan helps promote and
does so much “grunt” work towards helping all the Children’s Choir ministries be as successful as they have
been. In case you have a difficult time describing all she has done and continues to do for all SUMC
children’s ministries, allow me to do it for you; it is called Servant Leadership and Susan practices it well.
What a blessing she is to all of us.

The choir suite is under renovation. The chair person for the project is Tara Foster and what an outstanding
job she has done in, I’ll say it again, the “grunt” work needed toward completing the project, which happens
to be ahead of schedule. I am already looking forward to the project’s completion which will include new
flooring, new paint for the walls and major reorganization of the entire choir suite for the purpose of
providing additional space. Thanks go out to all who have volunteered their help.

Even with all the renovations, music ministry continues as the Chancel Choir begins preparing for the God
and Country Celebration taking place July 3rd and the Youth Choir and Youth Bell Choir rehearse music for
their choir tour. The Joy Ringers Bell Ensemble will also be ringing this Sunday during the 8am and 11am
services, along with the Youth Choir singing at 8am and the Chancel Choir and Rejoice singing at 11am.

Blessings in Christ-
Jeff

Thank You! Your support of Sharing and
Caring is greatly appreciated. God Bless!
Peggy Tillman, Secretary THANK YOU NOTES

Please accept my deepest appreciation for your continued support of Opportunity Place. Your monthly gift of
$75.00 to provide dinner at the shelter is greatly appreciated by all our residents. It gives them a time to gather
together and share the day’s events as well as have a wholesome meal.

When families find themselves in the hopeless struggle of homelessness, we provide a safe, positive environment for
both the children and parents. Children are free to continue lives of growth, happiness, creativity, and playfulness.
Parents are equipped with guidance and resources. Perhaps most importantly, they have the support and
encouragement of other residents who are dealing with similar struggles. Our shelter is unique, and it is successful.

Thank you for contributing to our cause. Because of people like you, we are able to help these families remain
intact, off the streets, well fed and clothed while they secure new housing and employment.

Thank you again for this most charitable gift,
                                        Lenore Wilson, Executive Director
