Children’s fitness has become increasingly important and is a rapidly growing
area within the Health and Fitness Industry. Many Health Clubs, Leisure
Centres, Schools and Instructors run exercise classes, youth and after school
clubs for children.

Central YMCA Qualifications (CYQ) Level 2 Certificate in Instructing Health
Related Exercise for Children is particularly relevant for candidates aged 18
and over (NB: Mature Candidates aged 17+ are eligible for certification
although CYQ strongly advises that all candidates are 18+).

This qualification is available to individuals who wish to run health related
exercise sessions for children and those who are already running such
sessions without a formal qualification. No qualifications are necessary but
enthusiastic candidates with an interest in fitness and sport would be required.

NB: It is a requirement when working with children to have a Criminal
Records Bureau check.

Candidates will learn:

•   Exercise, fitness knowledge, anatomy and physiology level.
•   How to plan, teach and evaluate a safe and effective health related.
•   How to adapt exercise for a child with specific needs and requirements
    and integrate them into a fitness class.
•   The generic induction standard for people working with children in an
    active leisure setting.
•   Practical sessions, you will learn a variety of activities which can range
    from sports and fitness related activities for children 5-11 and 12-16 years
    old.
•   Set up sessions for children integrating drama, music and dance activities.
This certificate will qualify you as a Children’s Fitness Instructor.

To successfully gain certification you will need to pass ALL of the following:-

   1. Theory Paper (multiple choice 30 questions)
   2. Practical Assessment – teach a practical fitness/sports session for a
      group of children
   3. 2 Case Studies & a 6 Week Progressive Programme
   4. Completed course work and attendance at least 85% of the course
   5. CPR/First Aid Certificate

This course is suitable for adults 18+ who have an interest in health and
fitness for children. PE Teachers, sports coaches, fitness and dance
teachers.     No prior experience is necessary, however enthusiasm,
commitment and a desire to learn are essential. All candidates are
responsible for obtaining their CPR/First aid and CRB certificate. Students are
required to take responsibility for their own learning as part of the course is
self study.

Career Options: deliver classes in fitness, leisure centres, after school fitness
classes, youth clubs, options for alternative PE lessons.

All level 2 instructors are encouraged to progress to a level 3 qualification.
