        Saugus, MA - Lynnfield based
cm&b, Inc. began work on Regency
Center's new retail center, The Shoppes at
Saugus, in early 2007. Located on Route
1 North at the site of the now defunct
Caruso’s Diplomat, the 110,000sf, $35
million complex is slated to open for busi-
ness mid summer 2008.
       Create Architecture, Planning and
Design of New York, NY rounds out the
project team. The significance of cm&b’s
project delivery system to provide the nec-
essary framework for the coordination and
integration of the planning, design and
building process have been clearly evident
on the Shoppes at Saugus project. The
project team faced several challenges dic-
tated by site conditions and usage. As con-
struction manager, cm&b was able to set
the course and meet the developer’s
requirements despite the numerous antici-
pated obstacles.
First, the 14 acre site required exten-
sive site work. More than 600,000 cy of
ledge were blasted and relocated. In order
to maintain a balanced site, some areas of
the site needed to be raised by as much as
nine feet. Much of this was achieved
using the pulverized ledge from the site. A
second substantial step in the site work
was the construction of a 50 ft berm to

serve both a functional and aesthetic role.
       Functionally, the berm provides a
sound and view barrier for the retail cen-
ter’s residential neighbors. First, 150 trees
have been planted atop the berm to further
sound and sight obstruction for abutters.
From the site side, the berm assists in the
beautification of the rear of the project
providing a lush green backdrop for the
retail center.
       Second, the proposed locations of
the project’s buildings necessitated the
relocation of 900 linear feet of a MWRA
(Massachusetts Water Resources
Authority) main transmission water line.
The 36 inch main fed the project’s home-
town of Saugus and several surrounding
towns stretching as far away as
Swampscott and Marblehead. cm&b also
managed the construction of 400 linear
feet of a new 24 inch water line to better
service the local towns of Lynnfield and
Saugus. This endeavor required cm&b to
complete extensive permitting with the
MWRA. Additional permitting was
required from Mass Highway, as well as
other state and local agencies, to complete
                                                                                           MWRA Main Transmission Water Line

Durgin Pines Nursing Home – A New Twist on Rehabilitation
By Rachel Sunnell, RLA and Maura
     Ryan, Gawron Turgeon Architects
       Rehabilitation in nursing homes is
not rare. There are often fitness areas,
physical therapy rooms, and therapy pools
to help patients regain strength and relearn
skills needed to live their daily lives.
What is rare is when that rehabilita-
tion also takes place outside. Such a place
is about to exist in Kittery, Maine. Durgin
Pines Nursing Home is planning a garden
rehabilitation area designed by Gawron
Turgeon Architects.
On the front lawn, between the two
entrances, the garden will, in a sense, be an
“outdoor room” with defined edges of
planters, sitting areas and asphalt walkway
creating a beautiful and functional place.
The design of the garden is intended
to be just that – a garden. There will be a
blend of landscaping, a focus on the gaze-
bo, and trellises that allow privacy, while
not obstructing the view.
The goal for this outdoor rehabilita-
tion space is for patients to relearn the
physical skills needed in their daily life.
The outdoor garden will be a safe place for Artist rendering of Durgin Pines Nursing Home
