					TEEN DRIVER
A Family Guide to Teen Driver Safety
T his publication will assist families in understanding and managing the
journey their teens will travel from beginner to independent driver. The
Guide takes years of scientific data and translates it into practical informa-
tion for parents and teens to use in reducing teen crash risk (product number
81345-0000, 70 pages).

TEENS ARE HIGHEST-RISK DRIVERS
 • Everyday more than 10 young drivers age 15-20 are killed in crashes and another 745 are injured.
 • About 25% of crashes killing young drivers involve alcohol.
 • 39% of young male drivers and 26% of young female drivers were speeding at the time of their
   fatal crash. Chapter of
 • Although young drivers only represent 6% of all licensed drivers, they are the drivers in 16%
   of all traffic crashes.

HOW CAN WE REDUCE TEEN CRASHES?
     • Driver Education? • State Laws?
     • Better Teen Behavior? • Community Programs & Advertising?
     • Reducing Exposure to High-Risk Situations? • Parents?

DEVELOPMENT OF THE FAMILY GUIDE
 • NSC sponsored a symposium at which experts presented findings on what is proven to reduce teen crashes.
 • Results were peer-reviewed and published in NSC Journal of Safety Research.
 • Science was then translated into a family risk management strategy.
 • NSC produced Teen Driver: A Family Guide to Teen Driver Safety to help you understand the risks and take action to keep your teen
     safe on the road.

WHAT ARE THE ISSUES?
      Skills Behaviors
      • How skills are obtained has little impact. • Behavior is a factor in many crashes.
      • Driving experience is the most important factor. • Teen brains can't fully regulate risk-taking.
