HEY GUYS, IT'S THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND. I'M SHELBY HOLLIDAY AND
CHANNEL ONE NEWS STARTS RIGHT NOW!

HEY GUYS, IT'S THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND. TODAY WE'RE
CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH PLUS HOW WOULD YOU
SPEND $100 MILLION DOLLARS TO IMPROVE YOUR SCHOOLS? MORE ON
THAT COMING UP- I'M SHELBY HOLLIDAY AND CHANNEL ONE NEWS
STARTS RIGHT NOW!

WE'RE STARTING OFF WITH YOUR HEADLINES AND SHARON SONG IS HERE
TO HELP US OUT. WHAT'S GOING ON TODAY, SHARON?

[SHARON]

FIRST UP, WE'RE TAKING YOU TO THE UNITED NATIONS - WHERE
PRESIDENT OBAMA SPOKE IN FRONT OF WORLD LEADERS YESTERDAY

AT THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY- OR THE MEETING OF MINDS FROM AROUND
THE WORLD IN NEW YORK CITY - PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID 20-11 HAS BEEN
A HISTORY-MAKING YEAR OF REVOLUTION. HE TALKED ABOUT ALL THE
CHANGES IN THE MIDDLE EAST THAT WERE BROUGHT ABOUT WHEN
PEOPLE TOOK TO THE STREETS AND PROTESTED.USING THE INTERNET TO
GET ORGANIZED.
“Something is happening in our world. The way things have been is not the way they will
be. The humiliating grip of corruption and tyranny is being pried open. Technology is
putting power in the hands of the people.”

BUT IT WAS HIS SPEECH ON THE ISRAELI PALESTINIAN CONFLICT THAT
TOOK FRONT SEAT.

HE URGED WORLD LEADERS NOT TO GET INVOLVED DURING THIS U-N
SESSION AND TRIED TO PUSH THE PALESTINIAN SIDE TO SIT DOWN AGAIN
WITH ISRAEL BEFORE IT SEEKS HELP FROM OTHER COUNTRIES.
PALESTINIANS WANT THEIR OWN STATE TO BE RECOGNIZED BY THE U-N.
CURRENTLY PALESTINIANS LIVE IN A TERRITORY THAT IS NOW PART OF
ISRAEL.

There is no short cut to the end of a conflict that has endured for decades. Peace is hard
work.

NEXT, SOME BIG NEWS IN THE WEATHER WORLD. THE COUNTRY OF JAPAN
IS BRACING FOR FLOODING AFTER A POWERFUL TYPHOON MADE
LANDFALL.HITTING THE NATION'S CAPITAL TOKYO

THE TYPHOON - WHICH IS ANOTHER WORD FOR HURRICANE - BUT USED IN
CERTAIN AREAS OF THE WORLD - CAME ASHORE WITH WINDS OF UP TO
100 MILES PER HOUR.AND IT POUNDED THE ISLAND WITH HEAVY RAIN

SOME PARTS OF JAPAN WERE EXPECTED TO GET THEIR AVERAGE
MONTHLY RAINFALL IN JUST 12 HOURS.

THE FAST-MOVING STORM THEN HEADED TO AN AREA THAT'S STILL
RECOVERING FROM A DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI
EARLIER THIS YEAR, WHERE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS WERE DAMAGED
AND IT RESULTED IN A SAFETY CRISIS.

ENGINEERS SAY THEY'RE WATCHING THE SITUATION CLOSELY TO
PREVENT ANY TOXIC LEAKS.

SO FAR, SIX PEOPLE HAVE BEEN REPORTED DEAD OR MISSING.

MORE THAN 200 THOUSAND HOUSEHOLDS ARE LEFT WITHOUT
ELECTRICITY.

AND FINALLY, WE'VE BEEN TRACKING THE LATEST UPDATES ON THE
AMERICAN HIKERS BEHIND BARS IN IRAN. AND AFTER SPENDING MORE
THAN TWO YEARS IN JAIL, THE HIKERS WERE SET FREE YESTERDAY.
AMERICANS JOSH FATTAL AND SHANE BAUER SPED AWAY FROM A
PRISON IN THE IRANIAN CAPITAL TEHRAN AND HEADED FOR FREEDOM.

THEY HAD BEEN SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS IN PRISON. IRAN SAID THEY
ENTERED THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY, BUT THE PAIR SAID THEY
ACCIDENTALLY CROSSED THE BORDER BETWEEN IRAQ AND IRAN WHILE
ON A HIKE.

THEY WERE ARRESTED ALONG WITH THEIR FRIEND SARAH SHROUD. SHE
WAS LET GO EARLY FROM PRISON LAST YEAR FOR MEDICAL REASONS.

JUDGES IN IRAN AGREED TO A 1 MILLION DOLLAR BAIL DEAL AND SET
THE PAIR FREE.

SINCE THE U.S. HAS NO DIPOLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH IRAN, SWISS AND
OMANI OFFICIALS HELPED WITH THE RELEASE PROCESS.

THE TWO HIKERS WILL SPEND THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS IN THE COUNTRY
OF OMAN BEFORE HEADING HOME.

FAMILY MEMBERS SAY THEY ARE VERY EXCITED BUT WON'T BE ABLE TO
BREATHE EASY UNTIL THE HIKERS STEP FOOT ON AMERICAN SOIL.

AND THAT WRAPS UP YOUR HEADLINES, SHELBY.

[SHELBY]

THANKS SHARON. ALRIGHT COMING UP, IF YOUR SCHOOL GOT A 100
MILLION DOLLAR DONATION - WHAT WOULD YOU USE IT ON? WE'LL TELL
YOU WHAT ONE DISTRICT DID NEXT.

OK NOW BACK TO THAT QUESTION - IF SOMEONE GAVE YOU $100
MILLION DOLLARS TO IMPROVE THE SCHOOLS WHERE YOU LIVE, HOW
WOULD YOU SPEND THE MONEY? WELL THAT QUESTION IS A REALITY
FOR A SCHOOL DISTRICT IN NEW JERSEY.

IT TOOK A WHILE TO FIGURE OUT WHERE THE MONEY SHOULD GO BUT
NOW THERE'S A PLAN. HERE'S JUSTIN FINCH WITH THE STORY.

[JUSTIN]

LAST YEAR, FACEBOOK CEO MARK ZUCKERBERG WENT ON THE OPRAH
WINFREY SHOW AND ANNOUNCED HE HAD SOMETHING TO GIVE AWAY.

"100 million dollars!!"
THAT'S RIGHT, ZUCKERBERG GAVE AWAY $100 MILLION DOLLARS TO
HELP PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, WHERE THE SCHOOL
DISTRICT IS STRUGGLING WITH LOW TEST SCORES, BUILDINGS THAT ARE
IN BAD SHAPE AND A GRADUATION RATE OF JUST 55% - 20 POINTS BELOW
THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.

BUT HOW WILL ALL THAT MONEY BE SPENT?

"There's so much. Early childhood efforts, new school models, supporting teachers,
which I think is going to be a big area."

NEWARK'S MAYOR, CORY BOOKER, SAYS HE WANTS TO IMPROVE
NEWARK'S SCHOOL SYSTEM AND HAS BEEN GIVEN A LOT OF CREDIT FOR
ATTRACTING THE DONATION FROM ZUCKERBERG.

BUT MAYOR BOOKER DOESN'T HAVE FULL CONTROL OVER THE FUNDS.
AND IN FACT THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY TOOK OVER CONTROL OF
NEWARK'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS 16 YEARS AGO BECAUSE THEY WERE IN BAD
SHAPE.

BUT YESTERDAY NEAR THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIG
DONATION, STATE OFFICIALS SAID THEY WOULD BE SPENDING $600-
THOUSAND DOLLARS ON TEACHERS.

TEACHERS WHO COME UP WITH INNOVATIVE CLASSROOM PROGRAMS
CAN APPLY FOR A SHARE OF THE MONEY.

AND SOME HAS ALREADY BEEN SPENT ON OPENING NEW SCHOOLS,
MAKING THE SCHOOL DAY LONGER AND RECRUITING NEW TEACHERS.

IT'S A START, BUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE REST OF THE MONEY?
STUDENTS HAVE THEIR OWN TWO CENTS AND SAY THERE'S A LOT TO BE
DONE…

"The books that we got are not good enough. They be messed up, written in, pages torn
up."

"Maybe he could give us better nutritional lunch and more writing tools."

CAMI ANDERSON IS THE NEW SUPERINTENDENT FOR THE NEWARK
SCHOOL DISTRICT. HER JOB IS TO FIX THE FAILING SCHOOL SYSTEM THAT
ALREADY SPENDS CLOSE TO 24-THOUSAND DOLLARS PER STUDENT EACH
YEAR, MORE THAN TWICE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.

"Ultimately I am the chief executive, the superintendent, the person responsible for
improving the school system. Period."
SHE'S ALREADY CHANGED SOME THINGS - AND BROKEN AWAY FROM
DISTRICT POLICY BY GIVING PRINCIPALS MORE POWER TO HIRE STAFF.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL, NEWARK'S SUPERINTENDENT HAS MADE SOME BIG
CHANGES. SHE HIRED SEVENTEEN NEW PRINCIPALS TO SHAKE THINGS UP
AND RE-ENERGIZE THE DISTRICT.

NOW BACK TO THE REST OF THAT MONEY - HOW WILL IT BE SPENT?

BOTH THE MAYOR AND SUPERINTENDENT SAY THEY SHARE SIMILAR
GOALS… LIKE INVESTING IN TECHNOLOGY FOR STUDENTS, HELPING
TEACHERS AND STAFF GET THE ADDITIONAL TRAINING THEY NEED AND
STARTING EARLY - BY GETTING YOUNGER STUDENTS INTO PROGRAMS
THAT WILL HELP THEM GET OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT.

BUT AS MUCH AS THEY WOULD LIKE TO MOVE QUICKLY, THEY KNOW
THAT *REAL REFORM* WILL TAKE YEARS.

JUSTIN FINCH

CHANNEL ONE NEWS.

[SHELBY]

THANKS JUSTIN. COMING UP, GET READY- WE'VE GOT A POP QUIZ FOR
YOU! THAT'S UP NEXT.

The United States Army Presents Hispanic Heritage Month

[SHELBY]

IN HONOR OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH- WE'RE PUTTING YOU GUYS TO
THE TEST.

THE NEW CENSUS NUMBERS CAME OUT THIS YEAR, SHOWING US HOW
MUCH OUR NATION IS CHANGING AND BECOMING MORE DIVERSE. ONE
SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IS THAT THE HISPANIC POPULATION IS GROWING.

NOW - MEXICO HAS THE LARGEST NUMBER OF HISPANICS OF ANY
COUNTRY.

BUT DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE U-S RANKS IN TERMS OF THE NUMBER OF
HISPANICS IN THE WORLD?

IS IT
A - 10TH

B - 2ND

C - 25TH

D - 1ST

YOU'VE GOT TEN SECONDS!

TIMES UP, IF YOU GUESSED - B. 2ND YOU GOT IT!

IN THE U.S HISPANICS MAKE UP SIXTEEN PERCENT OF THE TOTAL
POPULATION. THAT'S 1 IN 6 U.S. RESIDENTS. IT'S THE NATION'S LARGEST
ETHNIC OR RACE MINORITY AND IT'S ALSO THE FASTEST GROWING
MINORITY GROUP, UP 43 PERCENT FROM APRIL 2000.

SO WHAT'S HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH ALL ABOUT?

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH STARTS ON SEPTEMBER 15 AND
RUNS THROUGH OCTOBER 15 AND WAS CHOSEN TO INCLUDE THE
ANNIVERSARIES OF INDEPENDENCE FOR COSTA RICA, EL SALVADOR,
GUATEMALA, HONDURAS, NICARAGUA, MEXICO, CHILE AND BELIZE.

IT ALSO CELEBRATES THE CULTURE AND TRADITIONS OF THOSE WHO
TRACE THEIR ROOTS TO SPAIN, MEXICO AND THE SPANISH-SPEAKING
NATIONS OF CENTRAL AMERICA, SOUTH AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

THE MONTH IS MEANT TO RECOGNIZE THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF HISPANIC
AND LATINO AMERICANS IN THE U.S.

SOME NOTABLE HISPANIC AMERICANS YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF: U.S.
SUPREME COURT JUSTICE SONIA SOTOMAYOR, BASEBALL SLUGGER ALEX
RODRIGUEZ, AND ACTRESS SELENA GOMEZ.

NOW- WHO ARE ALLISON AND HAYLEY? THEY'RE SPEEDY SISTERS, BUT
THEY MIGHT LOOK A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN YOU EXPECT.

[SHELBY]

THE SOONER RACING TEAM AT OKLAHOMA UNIVERSITY IS PUTTING THE
FINISHING TOUCHES ON ALLISON--THE LATEST EDITION IN A LINE OF O-U
RACING CARS.
NIC EVANS IS PART OF THE TEAM. LAST YEAR, HE DROVE HALEY,
ALLISON'S OLDER SISTER TO EIGHTH PLACE IN AN INTERNATIONAL
COMPETITION.

"It’s definitely exhilarating. It’s a very fun car to drive. There’s nothing like it, and yeah
it's really fast it goes zero to sixty in about three seconds."

THE FIRST PIT STOP IN BUILDING A FORMULA ONE CAR IS AT THE
COMPUTER…

"What we have here is a physical model of the car. This allows us to see the way that
things fit together, how much things weigh, the way that the car's going to be laid out
overall."

OTHER TEAM MEMBERS WORK ON THE ENGINE. THEY START IT UP, AND
REV IT UP, UNTIL IT'S READY TO GO.

SO HOW MUCH OUTSIDE HELP DO THEY HAVE?

"Everything is done in house. We do all the engineering calculations for it, all the design
stuff, and we do all the manufacturing in house as well. But the best part is, we get to race
it ourselves."

AND THESE STUDENTS PLAN TO RACE THESE CARS…AS WELL AS THEIR
EDUCATION…TO THE CHECKERED FLAG.

SOOOO…YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO MAJOR IN
WHEN YOU GET TO COLLEGE…

YOU MIGHT CONSIDER BUSINESS…FASHION…BROADCASTING…OR
BUILDING FORMULA ONE CARS!!!????

[SHELBY]

OK GUYS THAT'S IT FOR TODAY'S SHOW. I'M SHELBY HOLLIDAY AND I'LL
BE BACK WITH MORE NEWS FOR YOU TOMORROW.

WELL WE'RE ALMOST OUT OF TIME FOR TODAY, BUT BEFORE WE GO,
HERE'S ONE MORE THING.
