                           TERMINOLOGY

SWITCH/PBX: The telephone system as a whole is called a switch or PBX.
Your switch is a Nortel Meridian Option _____. Nortel is the
manufacturer, meridian is the brand name and Option ____ is
              the size of the switch

PORT: A port is an address in the switch where a phone is located. A
port is also called a terminal number.

CARD: Each card in the switch has a card in it. Analog and digital
cards have 16 ports or addresses on them. That means you can
have 16 phones programmed on each analog or digital card.

ANALOG: All fax machines and modems are analog devices. Single line
telephones are also analog. Analog phones and devices are
programmed on a different card than digital phones.

DIGITAL: all multi-line phones or phones with features are considered
digital phones. Digital phones use different cards than
              analog phones.

TN: Terminal Number. A terminal number is the position or address
on a card. For example, if a phone’s TN is 7 6, this means
the phone is on card 7, position or port 6.

DN: Directory Number. This is the extension number of a phone.

CONSOLE: The console is the main answering position for your company.

TRUNK: A trunk is a line that comes from the telephone company that
              allows you to make calls.

LOAD OR
OVERLAY: A “Load” is a program you go into to access different
information. The Option 11 has over 100 loads. A load is
              also called an overlay.
                             REFERENCE GUIDES

The Nortel manuals are commonly known as NTP’s or Northern Telecom Publications.
The most frequently used manuals are:

1) Feature documentation

Explains feature interaction, packaging and operation. This manual will
give a very detailed explanation of each and how it works.

2) Administration programs

This manual will explain how to program the loads.

3) System Messages

This manual explains all error codes.
                           SYSTEM ERROR MESSAGES

System error messages are sent when invalid information is sent to the PBX. Use
the “System Message” manual for a description of the error code.

The first three letters separate error codes.

SCHXXXX Service Change Error
Most common error messages received during functional
                    programming.

ERRXXXX Error Monitor (Hardware)
When the call processing software detects information which is
not in the correct format or when invalid information is
detected, and ERR message is printed.

BUGXXXX Software Error Monitor
When the call processing software detects information detects
information, which is not in the correct format, or when
invalid information is detected a BUG message is output.

SYSXXXX System Loader message
This program is loaded into memory whenever a complete program
                    and data load is required.

                    SYSLOAD occurs when:

                    1) The system is powered-on
                    2) The system RESET button is pressed
                    3) A power failure has caused some of the memory contents
                          to be destroyed.

A SYSXXXX FATAL message indicates a fatal error requiring
                    hardware to be replaced.
