                  William a weaver of Alfriston took apprentice J Humphrey aged 15, Nov 1774 for 7 years. He
                  J Soper Soper, of Harberton, took John Egbert a parish pauper aged311, as an apprentice until worked there
                  he was 24. He deserted a month before his 21 birthday. 7 months later he returned to the
                  parish where he was offered a job providing he bought of his time. His father paid Soper 4
                  guineas, 24 Feb 1783. Soper offered to give up the pauper's indenture but it was not asked for.
                  Seems? the indenture was not available 2 years later [ had Soper died? perhaps Egbert had
                  become chargeable to the parish?]. Court decided indentures were bought.
                  Joseph Soper of Plymouth & his son Joseph in partnership with Henley (in Newfoundland). They
                  bought 'The Devon' [£1,000?] to trade with Newfoundland & later Labrador, [perhaps partially
                  fishing?]. It traded in Labrador 1818-21. The partners fell out in 1821 & Soper used the boat to
                  trade fish to Oporto, wine to Ireland & coal from Newcastle to Plymouth. Henley it would then be
                  layed up until Henley returned. The boat decayed. 1825-8 Henley took Soper to Court, Soper to
                  Mr Soper was given a part of a communal pew in Ashburton Church. The family which lost 2 foot
                  of seating took the church to court. Parham v Templar, Easter 1821 & appeals cost £100 & take
                  14 pages to summarize. The church eventually won & presumably Soper got to sit down : from
                  Mr R Soper Royal Dock-yard, Devonport awarded 10 guineas for developing a pitch kettle and
                  ladle for paying the seams of ships at the Kings Theatre, Haymarket by the Duke of Sussex 25

Lamerton sent them to Sourton, Devon (9m NE). A court case 'King v Sourton Parish', 26 May
1836 decided which parish should support her. Ann Soper, born a pauper at Sourton 25 years
ago & married John Tickle there 7 or 8 years before this birth. After 2 or 3 years, he moved to
Clifton, '100 miles distant' [actually 32m NE?]. He'd rented a property there for 25 years.
(Incidentally, court told he lived incestuously there with his wife's sister who bore him children).
Which parish supported the paupers depended on illegitimacy. Proof of husband's 'non-access'
[no intercourse] was deemed inadmissible, so presumably Ann jnr (& Ann snr?) remained
