Welcome to Carmel Middle School Chorus! I am looking forward to a fantastic year of singing
together! Please read the following objectives, expectations and grading policies carefully.
The expectations and standards are high as the CMS Music Department continues its tradition of
excellence. Please read ALL OF THE FOLLOWING state content standards, grading policy, uniform
requirement and all performance attendance expectations. It is important that you AND YOUR
PARENTS understand the policies and procedures that are required for this performance class. This
information can also be found on my web page on the CMS site.
   All activities, performances, assignments and lectures will reinforce one or more of the following
                  California State Visual and Performing Arts: Music Content Standards

    1. ARTISTIC PERCEPTION
Processing, analyzing, and responding to sensory information through the language and skills
unique to music
     Students read, notate, listen to, analyze, and describe music and other aural information,
        using the terminology of music.

   2. CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Creating, performing, and participating in music.
    Students apply vocal and instrumental musical skills in performing a varied repertoire of
       music. They compose and arrange music and improvise melodies, variations, and
       accompaniments, using digital/electronic technology when appropriate.

   3. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT
Understanding the historical contributions and cultural dimensions of music
    Students analyze the role of music in past and present cultures throughout the world,
       noting cultural diversity as it relates to music, musicians, and composers.

   4. AESTHETIC VALUING
Responding to, analyzing, and making judgments about works of music
    Students critically assess and derive meaning from works of music and the performance
      of musicians according to the elements of music, aesthetic qualities, and human
      responses.

    5. CONNECTIONS, RELATIONSHIPS, APPLICATIONS
Connecting and applying what is learned in music to learning in other art forms and subject
areas and to careers
     Students apply what they learn in music across subject areas. They develop competencies
        and creative skills in problem solving, communication, and management of time and
        resources that contribute to lifelong learning and career skills. They also learn about
        careers in and related to music.

Rehearsal Expectations
A CMS chorus student will:
1.    Listen and follow instructions at All times.
2.    Always show respect for the director and other chorus students.
3.    Enter the chorus room ON TIME and READY TO REHEARSE.
4.    Leave food, gum and drinks OUTSIDE the chorus room. Water is encouraged!
5.    No cell phone or IPOD use in class at any time!
6.    Do his/her BEST AT ALL TIMES!

       Rehearsal Procedure
       1.     Be in your assigned seat BEFORE the tardy bell rings.
       2.     Have your folder out and music in rehearsal order.
       3.     Positive participation in warm ups, sight singing and song rehearsals.
       4.     Be responsible for putting folder away when class is dismissed.


Grades will be updated every two weeks on the Aeries grade book. Check them to stay
informed of your progress!


Grading Policy:
Grades will be determined by three factors:
  1.      Classroom attendance, behavior and attitude. – 25%
       Excessive absences and tardiness will lower your grade. Come to class and be on time!
       Disruptive behavior and poor attitude will also lower your grade.

                    25 points for class participation is possible each week.. Lack of effort,
                   disrespectful behavior, lack of preparation, tardiness and absences will
                                         result in a reduction of points.

  2.   Performance attendance – 40%
        Attendance at ALL PERFORMANCES is MANDATORY! This is a performance class
        and a performance is equal to a final exam.

                         EXCUSED ABSENCES CONSIST OF ILLNESS OR FAMILY
                                             EMERGENCY;
                  ALL OTHER REQUESTS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES ARE SUBJECT TO
                    DIRECTOR APPROVAL AND MUST BE SUBMITTED IN WRITING
                    FROM PARENT/GUARDIAN AT LEAST THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO
                                         THE PERFORMANCE.
  3.   Tests and quizzes – 20%
        Written and singing tests will be given regularly. You will be responsible for
        knowing the material. Your score will be recorded and will be reflected in your
        grade.

  4.   Written assignments of all types – 15%
       Most written assignments will be completed during class, but occasionally homework
       will be assigned.
      Performance Attire

        Our performance uniform is a CMS MUSIC SHIRT and BLACK pants and dark,
                                          closed toe shoes.
      The CMS Music shirt may be purchased $15.00. Please make checks payable to CUSD
                                        MUSIC BOOSTERS
                                        Returning students
                Please check your shirt and pants for correct fit and cleanliness.
                                 Please complete the attached order form.
               If this is in any way a financial difficulty, Music Booster scholarships are
                           available. Please have parent contact Mrs. Bernhardt.

An optional sweat shirt may be purchased just for fun! It is not a required uniform piece.
More information will be forth coming.

CUSD MUSIC BOOSTERS
Music Boosters supports music at all school levels.
This organization helps CMS purchase music, instruments and equipment. It also pays for
travel and festival fees. The CMS Music Department will be participating in two Music
Booster fundraisers: Music Discount Card and the CMS Halloween Dance.
Your family participation in these events and other Booster activities will enable the Music
Department to provide more musical opportunities to the students.
If you have not done so, please consider joining the CUSD MUSIC BOOSTERS.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Parent involvement is the key to student success! Please encourage your student to achieve
his/her musical potential. Your cooperation and participation in enabling your student to
attend all performances is essential. You are welcome to visit a class at any time. I will be
asking for volunteers throughout the year for field trip chaperones, photographers,
refreshments, and concert backstage assistance.      Please supply me with a current email
address as I will periodically send important information.
