                                             Abstract

In this paper you will find what I have learned about counseling relationship; by explaining the

ethics that help develop trust and honesty. Also what I have learned about confidentiality and

practicing in an ethical fashion. In conclusion I will address the case of Bettina and what I found

was to be a more ethical approach to the situation.
First 2-3 words of Title 3

                                Practicing Ethically as a Counselor

I have found many ways to apply ethics into counseling not only as a professional but as a

caring professional.

I believe that taking action and being held accountable for your actions is necessary in this

profession. I have found examples in the ACA code of ethics to help explain my take on ethical

practices as a counselor.

                                     Counseling Relationships

Practicing ethically as a counselor requires paying attention to the code of ethics. This is

put into a guideline by the American Counselor Association. In counseling it is important for me

to establish trust; honesty; and open communication. Starting out open by following this ethics

code (Counselors and their clients work jointly in devising integrated counseling plans that offer

reasonable promise of success and are consistent with abilities and circumstances of clients.

Counselors and clients regularly review counseling plans to assess their continued viability and

effectiveness, respecting the freedom of choice of clients.(ACA (2005) A.1.c Counseling Plans.)

This will allow for me to open lines of communication and to establish some solid grounds to

follow through the therapeutic treatment.

     Respect for Privacy

In establishing trust with my client, I can assure him/her that I do follow the code of ethics

that explains (Counselors respect client rights to privacy. Counselors solicit private information

from clients only when it is beneficial to the counseling process.(ACA (2005) B.1.b Respect for

Privacy) this allows my client to know that I will not ask for any information I don’t need.

It will also inform him/her that I will maintain a confidential counselor-client relationship.
First 2-3 words of Title 4

        Being honest

Being honest and sharing I maintain neutral values with my client will help him/her to feel

more comfortable and possibly allow him/her to be open and honest with no fear of being

judged. This includes me being honest with myself as well. “If you cannot obtain objectivity

regarding certain value, it is essential that you make it your problem rather than the client’s”.

(Issues and Ethics in the Helping Profession pg.78 (eighth edition). Then it is imperative for me

to be honest and consider referring them to a colleague who may be less impartial. No matter

how hard I may try to maintain a neutral stance I am only human and may have this issue to deal

with.

                                        Conclusion

Throughout our lesson plan one thing struck a chord with me and that was, “The Case of

Bettina”. The action or perhaps the lack of action the counselor in this case took was disturbing

to me. “These attempts were judged to be primarily attention getting gestures, her counselor

feels manipulated and does not report them”,pg 108 (Issues and Ethics in the Helping Profession)

I was completely taken back by this statement in the case explanation. I immediately started to

look up the laws and ethics in such a matter; so I may know what to do if I was faced with a

client like Bettina. I was not able to find a law saying it was illegal to commit suicide I did

however find what could be done if this dilemma should arise. I found under (Wisconsin Statutes

Pg 11 section 51.15) that a person who attempts to cause harm on themselves could possibly be

put into custody. After reading this statutes gave me a better idea of what the legalities may be in

such a case.
